Subject in Focus – Digital Technologies: Computing (Mr Mowbray)
Digital Technologies: Computing, has introduced students to new exciting and invigorating projects for interactive, engaging and authentic learning. It has allowed students to express themselves, as well as achieve their personal goals in developing essential skills needed for the digital age.
Grade 7 students have been fully utilising the new one-to-one iPad implementation to progress their learning in digital technologies. Students have explored and created 3D models in augmented reality (AR) space. Thoroughly enjoying learning the basics of binary and programming, using Sphero robots and the online Scratch application. Students were set various challenges, which included programming a robot to race around a self-made track and to move through obstacles via the inbuilt compass and gyroscope. They created fully working models of the water cycle in Minecraft, learned data entry, data collecting and varying forms of data presentation via tools and applications with wireless digital thermometers, live data feeds and Excel input.
Grade 8 students have been learning the processes of computational thinking, testing this knowledge in the Bebras Challenge. Students delved in the world of web development, learning HTML and CSS. This work has increased student’s understanding of the web and the complexities behind websites. Small computers called BBC Microbits help students program and understand the hardware requirements necessary to interact with peripheral devices. They then learnt block coding on a more advanced scale, developing their own mod in Minecraft Education. Finally, they learned how to avoid cyber-attacks, phishing, viruses and how to protect themselves from future data strikes.
Grade 9 and 10 students have disassembled, labelled, and reassembled, decommissioned desktop computers. They were introduced to the foundations of programming, electronics, and mechanics through a series of playful experiments. Using Arduino computer kits, students have delved into coding to program a computer to perform pre-set tasks and interactive experiences. Students have been learning the components of a digital computer system - developing their knowledge and understanding of computer hardware by creating their own gaming PC and pitching their creation to the class. Finally, they have been using, Python and Scratch to develop their critical thinking skills, knowledge in algorithms and developed a working video game.

High School Cricket Championships
The High School Cricket Championships were held at the Windsor Park Precinct on the first day of summer and fittingly, the sun was shining brightly.
Two weeks earlier, Riverside High School had a record 7 teams play in the qualifying rounds. Five of the teams were female, with one female and one male team qualifying for the finals.
The girls who represented Riverside in the final were all Year 9 students. They had a lot of fun and represented themselves and the school in an outstanding manner, displaying excellent sportsmanship and support of one another and their opponents. The team finished fourth and can be proud of their achievements over the two days.
The boy’s team that played in the finals were also all Year 9 students. The team won their semi-final against Kings Meadows quite convincingly to make it through to the Grand Final where they met a strong Queechy team. Riverside batted first and made a highly competitive 2 – 103, with Lachlan B top scoring with 19 runs off 15 balls and Lucas B making 18 off 15.
The Grand Final went down to the wire with Queechy needing 10 runs off the last over to be bowled by Liam B. Liam held his nerve with only 8 runs coming off his last over, to give Riverside victory by 2 runs.
Riverside were crowned the High School Cricket Champions. Congratulation’s boys! More importantly, the manner in which the players conducted themselves over the two days of the competition was very impressive. All students played hard but fair and had a great time.
A big thank you to Miss Hall for all the time and effort she invested in organising the seven teams from Riverside. It was appreciated by all involved.
Mr Musovic
Grade 10 End of Year Visual Art Exhibition.
Our Grade 10 students have been working very hard this term, to prepare for their end of year exhibition. Each Grade 10 Art student exhibited one piece of work with twelve Grade 10 students choosing to present a “body of work”.
There was an eclectic array of art works on display and as always, of a high quality.
Well done Grade 10.
Miss Saunders
NHSSA State Athletics Carnival
On Friday 2nd December Riverside High School sent a large group of students to the NHSSA State Athletics Carnival. This event was held at St Leonards Athletics Track and is a competition between the North, South and North-West State High Schools.
Riverside High had representatives from all grades in both Track and Field events. The student’s behaviour and performances were outstanding on the day, representing themselves and the school with pride.
Riverside were also asked to send along some helpers on the day and we had a strong cohort of students who volunteered their time. What is just as impressive is that on the day some students who were competing in events put their hand up to help as well.
We are very proud of the students and would like to acknowledge their efforts by creating certificates for them to keep as it is a great achievement to make this team. We would also like to publicly acknowledge Poppy W for stepping up on the day and running in the Grade 10 400m and Jesse D who came along as a helper and ended up running in the Grade 10 800m and 1500m.
There were some records broken on the day and we would like to congratulate the following students on their wonderful results:

State Growth has made some changes to school bus services in Launceston to take effect at the start of the 2023 school year. See details below. Metro will also be providing correspondence around these changes.
Riverside High School
- Currently, two route 845 services operate between Trevallyn and Riverside High School in the morning. The second of these services was introduced as a trial in 2020 to provide additional capacity. From Term 1 2023, we will cease the operation of the second route 845 and instead provide a new permanent Route 152S service from the City to Riverside High via Trevallyn.
- The Route 152S will depart the City at 7:38am on school days, and travel via the Delungra Rd, New World Ave loops, and Pomona Rd to arrive at Riverside High at approximately 8:10am
We would like to thank all the grade 10 students who have returned their RSVP's for the 2022 Granduands Dinner. We have been impressed with the creativity of a number of responses.
