We are now in Spring, and the days are getting longer, and we will hopefully have more sunshine! As the end of Term 3 approaches, I wanted to remind parents/guardians of where the school calendar can be located for Term 4. We are aware that many families like to have confirmed dates for the end of year school celebrations events and assemblies. The school calendar can be located at - Riverside High School (education.tas.edu.au) The Year 10 Graduands Dinner, our Presentation Evening as well as Grade Celebration Assemblies and Grade Picnic dates are included on the calendar.
2025 Prefects
A key component of the system of Student Government at Riverside High School is known as the Prefect Board. The Prefect Board is composed of Year 10 students who are selected as representatives by Year 7 to Year 9 students and staff in Term 4 of the year prior to taking office.
On Friday, 6th September, Grade 9 students attended the ‘Leadership and Personal Development Day’ (LAPD Day) where the student leadership opportunities for Year 10 2025 were discussed. All Year 9 Home Groups teachers and Year 9 students participate in the LAPD day which provides an opportunity for students to connect with their peers and learn about teamwork and what it means to be a leader. Each Home Group was presented with many physical and mental challenges throughout the day!
Students in Year 9 now have an opportunity to complete the ‘Leadership Contributions’ document which serves as an expression of interest for a leadership role in 2025. The ‘Leadership Contributions’ document enables the student to outline their contributions to the school over the past three years.
Students who wish to be a student leader at Riverside High School then participate in the ‘Leadership Day’ held at the Launceston Conference Centre – Door of Hope on Monday, 16th September. Those students who express an interest in a leadership role will be provided with further information on the process at the ‘Leadership Day’.
The Year 9 staff would like to congratulate the students on their outstanding effort and behaviour whilst working at Newstead College for their LAPD Day. Thank you to Newstead College for allowing us to work at their school.
Breakfast Program Riverside High School Café
Our Breakfast Program is held Tuesday to Friday mornings from 8:15 – 8:35am. Breakfast is served in our school cafeteria at no cost to the students. Students can have cereal, warm drinks, toast, and fruit. Thank you to our Health Nurse (Nurse Nige) and our School Chaplain (Michael) for supporting the program and Banjo’s Riverside who kindly provides food for the school.

Congratulations to Aurora
Aurora in Year 10 who competed in the National Australian Cross-Country Championships at Symmons Plains on Saturday, 31st August in very challenging conditions.
Amongst freezing conditions, it started pouring with torrential sleety rain just as Aurora was heading out to start line (rain got heavier whilst she was racing).
After a full week of solid rain, the conditions at Symmons Plains were boggy and extremely muddy!
Aurora didn't podium but was the second U17 Female for Tasmania in her age group across the line and happy to actually finish the race.
Congratulations to Patyn
Patyn in Year 8 who was an entrant in Dance Life Unite Competition at Door of Hope, on Friday, 30 August.

A Taste of the Industry: Year 9 and 10 Students Dive into Hospitality at Drysdale
On Monday, 26th August a group of Year 9 and 10 students attended a hospitality taster day at the prestigious Drysdale campus in Launceston. The taster day was hosted by the Tasmanian Hotels Association who provided staff all the way from Hobart for the day. This hands-on experience gave the students a unique opportunity to explore various facets of the hospitality industry, inspiring many to consider a future career in this dynamic field.
Students were divided into four groups and were rotated around four different workshops with each workshop lasting half an hour. One group worked with a professional chef, where the students rolled up their sleeves and got to work creating delicious dumplings from scratch. Under expert guidance, they learned the art of balancing flavors, folding dumplings with precision, and understanding the significance of presentation in the culinary world.
Group two were given the chance to step behind the bar, not to make cocktails, but to create refreshing mocktails. Working with an experienced bartender, the students learned the basics of mixing drinks, from the importance of ratios to garnishing techniques. The non-alcoholic creations were a hit, with students showcasing their flair and imagination while crafting eye-catching beverages. Mrs Greatbatch and Mr Pedersen made the most of the day by sampling these students mocktails.
The third group took on the role of baristas. Guided by a seasoned professional, they learned how to operate an espresso machine, mastering the techniques required to pull the perfect shot of coffee. From frothing milk to pouring lattes, they were immersed in the artistry of coffee-making. The experience gave them newfound respect for the skill and precision that goes into every cup of coffee served in cafes across the city.
The final group took on the responsibilities of a head waiter, engaging in a role-play scenario that had them practicing the art of pouring wine and serving dishes. Under the watchful eye a trained waitstaff, students honed their customer service skills, learning the importance of attentiveness, timing, and presentation when serving guests in a fine dining setting. The experience offered them a glimpse into the precision and professionalism required to excel in this role.
By the end of the workshop, all students had gained valuable insights into the various roles that make up the hospitality industry. For many, it was a day of discovery, sparking interest and potential career aspirations in fields they had never considered. The hands-on experience, coupled with the expertise of Drysdale’s hospitality professionals, provided an unforgettable learning opportunity that left a lasting impression on all who attended.

A group of Grade 9 and 10 students eager to explore their future careers attended the Northern Employment and Business Hub's Youth Career Expo at the Tailrace Centre.
The expo was organised by NEBHub and featured more than 40 exhibitors who were on hand to engage our students with information and insights into a range of career paths. Students were able to have rich conversations with industry professionals and build relationships that could shape their futures.
This wonderful opportunity included guest presenters through drop-in sessions, a stallholder Bingo, competitions, hands on activities and advice on pathways post-high school. Making connections with those who can help students (and staff) was a positive outcome of attending this event.
Riverside High would like to thank to the team at NEBHub for their outstanding event and continued support of our students.

STEM Mini Tech Ag Road Show Excursion
On Wednesday, 4 September, fifteen Grade 9/10 students travelled to Newstead College to participate in a hands-on experience designed to promote career pathways within Agriculture Science.
Through a collaboration between the University of Tasmania, Gemma Donelly (a past Riverside High School student) along with other UTAS staff and students, Kathy Fisher from the Beacon Foundation and Newstead College, the students participated in two workshops during the afternoon.
The initial activity was based in the gym and had students rotate through three different experiences. These activities were flying small drones, with the challenge being to not collide with walls, basketball hoops or other students. For many students this was the first time they had ever experienced flying drones. There were also some amazing virtual reality animations for students to experience and finally a large maze for students to navigate with Sphero’s.
The second session was based on small teams developing an agricultural plan to facilitate the most efficient production of a crop of their choice and the challenges faced to be successful. Through this session, students were given a better understanding of the diversity of career pathways that exist through a degree in Agricultural Science.
We would like to thank everyone involved in the organisation of the sessions as they were engaging for our students and offered insights into future career opportunities.

Subject in Focus – The Arts – Music
Riverside High School Music Program
Riverside High School’s Music program stands out with two core pedagogical approaches: Gradual Release and Inquiry-Based Learning. These methods guide students in exploring their musical interests, encouraging engagement through practical, analytical, or compositional experiences. By personalising their musical journey, students are more likely to remain motivated and invested throughout the course. The program also offers numerous opportunities to develop performance skills outside the classroom, ensuring a well-rounded music education.
Highlights:
Launceston Competitions
This year, several Riverside High School students participated in the prestigious Launceston Competitions, a long-standing event that celebrates musical talent from across the region. Our students performed exceptionally well, showcasing both their individual and ensemble skills in categories, from duo to group performances. Their hard work and dedication was on full display, with many students achieving high placements and positive feedback from judges.
Battle of the Bands
The Music program’s most anticipated event was held on Friday, 28th June at Door of Hope, drawing an audience of over 400 attendees. Featuring 11 acts and 21 songs performed within 90 minutes, the night was a celebration of talent and teamwork. The event not only showcased Riverside High's musicians but also fostered a supportive, collaborative environment where students from all grades took on both performance and technical roles.
Key highlights of the event include:
- Showcasing the diverse musical talent of Riverside High School students.
- Creating a team-like, supportive atmosphere for all participants.
- Offering students the chance to perform in front of a live audience.
- Involving students from every grade, whether in performance or behind-the-scenes tech roles.

Senior 3rds Netball
On Wednesday, 11th September, the Senior Netball Division 3 team played an intense and highly competitive Grand Final match against Cressy District High School, showcasing exceptional teamwork, skill, and determination.
Despite facing difficult conditions, the girls demonstrated their resilience and adaptability, staying focused. Leading the match from the first score, the girls were awarded the victory after the match was eventually abandoned due to the inclement weather, winning with a score of 4-3. Every player contributed to the end result, congratulations to the entire team for their efforts throughout the season and on the day!
A big thank you to Miss Clarke, Miss Rolls and the Division 1 team who supported and cheered us on all the way!

Junior 1st Netball
On Thursday, our division one netball team played off for premiership against ladder leaders, Prospect. The highly anticipated netball grand final delivered a fantastic display of sportsmanship and teamwork. As the game progressed, so did our girls. After a slow start, shooters Scarlett, Amelia and Kate found their rhythm, focusing on communication and reading off each other which helped them deliver some impressive goals. Midcourters Mia, Charli, Kennedy and Beatrix orchestrated a series of smooth transitions and plays which kept Prospect on their toes. Defenders Piper, Sierra and Grace worked hard to keep Prospect out of the circle, picking off rebounds and winning some deflections. In the end, Prospect took the lead making it hard for us to come back. Our girls had fun, enjoyed themselves and represented Riverside with pride. They should be very proud of their achievements this year. Special mention to the other Riverside High School teams for coming along and supporting.

On Friday, 6th September, Grade 9 students participated in Leadership and Personal Development Day (LAPD) at Newstead College.
LAPD is a program designed to support students to explore their skills and strengths across four domains: Social Management, Self-Management, Social Awareness and Self Awareness. These focus areas allow students to develop their interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, each of which are then transferable into the workplace and potential leadership opportunities in the future.
Students participated in a range of activities, both individually and in small groups. A particular highlight of the day was the egg-drop challenge with students challenged to build a structure that could support a chocolate egg being dropped without breaking. Students were encouraged to work together to foresee potential barriers and prevent any breakage from occurring. It was fantastic to see the creativity of students in this activity.
This was the first in a series of leadership and personal growth opportunities for Grade 9 students as they work towards putting their applications forward for Prefect, Peer Mentor and the Career Awareness Program in 2025. More information about these opportunities will be provided to families in the near future.
A massive thank you to all staff who helped facilitate each session of LAPD Day, and to the staff of Newstead College for allowing us to take over the college for the day.

On Thursday, 19th September, our Grade 10 students will be attending the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) program at Symmons Plains.
RYDA is a series of practical and powerful workshops that challenge students to change the way they think about road safety, RYDA helps lay the foundation for safe road use throughout their lives. RYDA equips young people with the tools and knowledge they need to stay safe on the road. RYDA focuses on cognition development, building and increasing social competency and resilience and motivating low risk behaviour. Facilitators work with students to develop and practise personalised strategies and life skills which will help them respond positively to challenges on the road, both as drivers and highly influential passengers. (http://rse.org.au)
As this is an official school activity and full school learning uniform must be worn on the day.
Buses will leave Riverside High School at 8:55am sharp on the day so we ask that you make sure your child is at school by 8:45am. Buses will return to Riverside by 3:10pm to allow students to proceed home in their usual way.
Students are also requested to provide their own lunch on this day as there is no provision for the purchase of food or drink at Symmons Plains, although tap water will be available for refilling drink bottles.
Please be aware that, in one session, there will be an emotional video dealing with loss of life and the ripple effect on family, friends and the wider community. We understand that this is an extremely sensitive topic and may be upsetting for some students. Please contact us if you do not wish your child to attend this session or have any concerns about your child being involved in this program.
Thank you for your support of this program. We invite you to view the website rse.org.au for parent resources to support this day.

Raise Our Voice in Parliament campaign
The annual Raise Our Voice in Parliament campaign, now in its fourth year, provides the opportunity for young people to express their diverse voices, views, and opinions in the Australian Parliament. The initiative, spearheaded by the social enterprise Raise Our Voice Australia, amplifies youth participation in politics and democracy by inviting discussion on issues important to youth and addressing the changes needed to tackle existing barriers innovatively.
Students were invited to write a speech on the topic: “What do you want your community to look like in the next ten years, and what can the next parliament do to achieve it?”. During the Youth Voice in Parliament week (7 - 10 October), politicians across Australia dedicate time to reading a speech written by a young person aged 25 or under from their electorate.
This year three Riverside High School students, Lachlan P, Nina H, and Gregor T were successful in having their speeches selected to be read in Parliament by Bridget Archer MP. Congratulations to these students.

Hi Everyone,
My name is Clare, and I am the new School Social Worker at Riverside High School.
I will be on site Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and alternate Mondays.
I have lots to learn between getting to know everyone, the school, the systems, and how best to support the young people at Riverside High School. Please let me know if you have any ideas and please come and introduce yourself if you see me around…I very well could be lost.
I am new to School Social Work, but I am not new to social work or to schools. I started my career as a teacher, graduating from UTAS and then moved to WA to live and work in a remote Aboriginal community in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia. I learnt more then I taught. During this time, I had the privilege to be invited on to country to learn culture and see some amazing places that are not open to the public. I learnt a lot about myself, and a lot about diversity and differences in our country and how I view the world, hence going on to study social work. I taught for most of my time in the Kimberley then spent some time in student services role, a youth hub coordinator, developing camps and after school programs, and finally two years at Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service. In my spare time I camped, travelled, and managed our local football team.
14 years later I am back home in Tasmania, with my family. I have a little girl, Lenni, who keeps me on my toes, and keeps me in a constant state of tired. But she is also the reason I love doing what I do, and why I think Social Work in Schools has an important role to play. I like knowing that when my daughter is in high school, she has a strong support system around her to support her learning needs both in and outside the classroom.
I enjoy coffee, markets, dancing, and spending time with the family. I am an open book, so feel free to ask me anything (within reason) and always happy to explore new ways of supporting our young people. Looking forward to getting to know the Riverside High School community.
Clare Webber
Attendance – Leaving school early
What should you do if your child needs to leave school early?
For attendance register regulations students are required to sign out at the Student Admin Counter if they have to leave school early for any reason. Communication from parents/guardians can be via:
- Phoning the Administration Office which is open between 8:00am – 4:00pm (6327 6333)
- Using the Schoolzine App.
- Sending an email to either the Home Group teacher or our school email address Riverside.High.Admin.Staff@decyp.tas.gov.au
- Sending a text message to 0418 140 427 (MGM OutReach)
- When LEAVING our school for an appointment, students must have a green leave form which has been signed by Admin Staff and an Assistant Principal. The Leave Pass is preferably completed before school and must be left with a member of our Admin Team at the time of leaving. The student must also sign out at the time of departure. Students who sign out for appointments should sign back in at the Student Admin Counter on their return.
Following this process ensures that students meet their parents for collection promptly without interrupting classes.
Reminder of what your child should do if feeling unwell:
If a student is feeling unwell or injured, the correct procedure is for them to get a signed pass from their teacher to go to the Admin office and ask for First Aid assistance. The First Aid officer will then determine if the student is well enough to stay at school or needs to go home. The First Aid officer will then contact parents/carers if the student needs to go home. Could parents/carers please discourage their child from messaging or calling home during class time instead of going to First Aid.
Hi, my name is Imogen, and I am a member of the Courage and Wellbeing Portfolio, as well as the House Prefect for Lawson. Within my portfolio I work alongside Sophie R, Hollie, Jenna, Sophie B, Oryn, Jack, Skyla and Aurora. As a group we work closely on promoting an environment that focuses on enhancing the wellbeing of students. To attain this goal the board has been implementing many activities across the school. During lunchtimes we run a basketball roster for 7/8s and 9/10s where different Houses compete against each other. Last month to incorporate the Paris Olympics the Wellbeing Portfolio ran a challenge for Grade 7 and 8 Home Groups. Each Home Group was given a country and were challenged to decorate their classroom in theme. This was a great success and it was positive to see so many classrooms displaying the Olympic spirit.
During my time at Riverside High School, I have valued every opportunity I have been provided with. I believe being a Prefect is a great way to give back to the school community. Over my time at High School, I have been a member of the Grade 8 and 9 Council as well as a Chair Monitor. During my free time I am a dedicated soccer player which has helped me develop traits of leadership, collaboration and resilience. I am also someone who is committed to their studies and I enjoy Sport Science, Science and Health. When I am not playing soccer, I enjoy reading, shopping, travelling and spending time with my family and friends.
For the remainder of the year, I hope to develop more activities that include everyone within the school. I enjoy working within a team and believe we have a Prefect Board that can help promote inclusion and wellbeing.
My name is Kacey and I am a part of the Community Portfolio for the 2024 Prefect Board, I work alongside my peers to organise fundraisers and create events that will benefit and raise money for our school as well as others. In my free time, I enjoy playing netball, touch football and AFL football. I also enjoy spending time outside in the sun and at the beach or pool. At school, I am passionate about all subjects but especially enjoy cooking and physical education.
I began my leadership journey in primary school when I sought ways to help others and the school. This made me realise how much I wanted to become a leader in my school and community, motivating me to become the core leader of the primary school, which I did with pride and passion.
Grade 10 has always been something I have been looking forward to, not because I want to finish school but because I want to make the most of the year. I want to be able to look back on my year and be happy with the memories. This made me want to help others to achieve the same dream. Last year during prefect applications I included a promise to the school community. In that promise I discussed how my goal was for students to enjoy school, I wanted them to be able to tell the people at home how their day was and say one good thing that happened. Reflecting on the year so far and seeing the smiles on people's faces during activities that we have organised fills me with satisfaction to know that we made a positive impact. For the continuing weeks of this year, I endeavour to work with my peers and try my hardest to improve the well-being of the students here at Riverside High School.
Imogen and Kacey
