Welcome back to Term 2! Hopefully everyone has had a restful break and recharged ready for a productive term ahead. I am extremely grateful to be in the position of Acting Principal and working with the school community to guide our students through the term.
DECYP Values
A key focus for our school community this term is to understand our new DECYP values and the behaviours that connect to our organisation. The new core values that support the department are: Connection, Respect, Courage, Growth, and Responsibility.
A snapshot of the values:
Connection: Cultivate strong bonds within our school family, fostering relationships that support one another through every challenge.
Respect: Each member of our diverse community is treated with kindness, empathy, and understanding.
Courage: Embrace the courage to step out of comfort zones, to pursue excellence, and to stand up for what is right, even when faced with adversity.
Growth: We take every opportunity to learn and grow, both academically and personally. Together, we will strive for continuous improvement.
Responsibility: We all play a vital role in shaping our school culture and environment. We take ownership of our actions, demonstrate integrity, and a commitment to making Riverside High School a place where everyone feels safe, valued, and inspired to thrive.
During Week 3 our students will have an extended home group and work through unpacking the school values and their core behaviours. These sessions will be supported by home group teachers and our Prefects who completed this process at their recent planning day.
Highlights across the beginning of Term 2 include:
ANZAC Parade
During the school holidays we had a large number of students and teachers represent our school in the ANZAC Day march. We were honoured to have one of our Grade 10 students, Ryan M, speak at the 11am service. We have included an extract from Ryan’s speech and photos on the following page for you to enjoy.
Grade 7 Wellbeing Day
Our Grade 7s recently completed their first wellbeing day for the year at Windsor Park. The students were able to build relationships and complete challenges designed to improve their communication skills and take them outside their comfort zone. We have an article and photos about this wellbeing day included within this newsletter.
House Challenge Day - Cross Country
Thank you to our HPE team for holding a highly successful House Challenge Day on what was a stunning day! Congratulations to all the students who showed courage and embraced the challenge of completing the cross-country course and to our HPE team and House Prefects for organising fun team-based house challenges to increase the participation and overall enjoyment of the day.
Martin Chatterton Guest Speaker
Our Grade 7 and 8 students, in addition to the Grade 9/10 Creative Writing class, had the opportunity to listen to and work with author, Martin Chatterton. He was an engaging speaker who spoke about his 30 years of writing, illustrating, and performing across the world.
White Card and First Aid Training
We had a number of our Grade 10 students successful complete their white card training to enable them to access our workplace learning programs throughout the rest of the year. We have also had 24 staff work late into the evening this week completing their workplace first aid certification so they can support the new risk management procedures for excursions and sporting events.
Term 2 Staffing
As mentioned in our last Newsletter, we have some staff changes for Term 2. Mr Lockwood will be on extended leave and Miss Wheaton has transferred to another school. As a result of this, it has been necessary to make some modifications to our Grade 10 core classes.
As you would be aware from recent media reports, we are currently experiencing a national teacher shortage and it is extremely difficult to obtain the services of fully qualified staff. We, therefore, made the decision to redistribute students from Mr Lockwood’s two Science classes and Miss Wheaton’s English class, to ensure that they will be taught by members of our existing teaching team who are experienced educators, are fully qualified in their specialist area, have a deep understanding of the Grade 10 Curriculum, and are best placed to support students’ academic outcomes. We are also in the enviable position of having relatively small classes in Grade 10 which means that the number of students in these modified classes is still conducive to optimal learning. This redistribution will also minimise any disruption to learning as the students who are changing classes will still have their Science and English classes scheduled at the same times each week.
Our grade leadership teams across the school have spent considerable time supporting our students during this transition. The redistributing of learning was completed with the utmost care to ensure that all classes are settled and cohesive. We greatly appreciate the manner in which all these families have worked in partnership with us to support our students. We have also been extremely impressed with the mature way that students have adapted to this change.

Subject in Focus – Media Production
One of our Wednesday afternoon short courses is Media Production. The aim of this subject is for students to create content for others to consume. Over the years we have offered Short Film Making, Podcasting and Graphic Design. This course combines a range of mediums and is evolving with the changing nature of media. Aspects of social media are explored such as creating short films from video content as Reels and marketing of content.
The 'winter' semester has commenced and there is an excited group of students keen to engage in a variety of activities. Areas of interest include creating films, music videos, podcast series, photography, memes, YouTube channels, stop motion animation, building skills in Photoshop and more.

During the holidays, we had a large group of students from across all grades attend the 109th ANZAC Day parade and service in Launceston. Accompanied by teachers, these students included members of Grade Councils, Peer Mentors and the Prefect Board.
It was a sombre occasion and these students represented our school with grace and composure. Prefect Ryan was invited to speak during the main service. Ryan spoke confidently and eloquently.
We are so proud of our students for their participation in what is such an important event.
Please find below an extract from the outstanding speech which one of our 2024 Prefects, Ryan, delivered at the ANZAC Day Service in Launceston:
Whilst the battle at Gallipoli served as the origin for our ANZAC tradition, it is not just the one battle that we gather to remember, we come together to commemorate all of the conflicts that we have engaged in, from the other fronts during World War One, the battles during the Second World War, Korea, Borneo, Vietnam, Malaya, the Middle East and the many global peacekeeping operations. We pause to remember, that for all the personnel who have served in conflict, even when their services come to an end, their battles do not stop. PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder affects many returning service people. The horrors they endured and the hardships they faced, have a permanent impact on the mental health of veterans and the soldiers who are currently in service.
We also recognise the lives that have been devastated outside of conflict, some of whom never made it to the battlefield, and we honour the sacrifices made by the families who lost loved ones and the friends who lost treasured companions. We do not stand together to glorify war; we stand together with a common purpose, to commemorate the individuals who have and continue to respond to the call of our nation to keep our country safe and protect our freedoms and rights. We stand together to honour the qualities of bravery, courage, mateship, and selflessness as well as the bond which makes our ANZAC spirit so precious and unique. We stand together to commit to striving to display their characteristics as a small way in which to show our profound gratitude and appreciation to all who have served our country. We stand together to reflect upon the casualties and trauma of war, and we must raise our voices and hold true to the values which will preserve peace – tolerance, kindness, empathy, and acceptance.
We stand together to ensure that the service and sacrifice of all Australians in wars, conflicts and peace keeping operations are never forgotten and are used as a call to action to inspire us to remain true to the spirit of the ANZAC’s as we live in a manner which honours them and makes us worthy of their profound sacrifice and service.
Lest we forget.

Grade 7 Teamwork & Wellbeing Day – Tuesday 30 April
On Tuesday, 30th April, the Year 7 cohort took part in the Teamwork and Wellbeing Day at Windsor Park. The day was designed to build positive relationships and further develop our communication and collaboration skills. After a short walk over to Windsor, the Peer Mentors led various teamwork activities, which we completed in our house groups. These games included: capture the flag, tarp folding and an egg and spoon race using a ping-pong bat and ball. We even made up some of our own crazy games, like making a human pyramid that we held for 20 seconds, or ducking under skipping ropes while they were being swung around and around!
The day was a huge success, working on our leadership and teamworking abilities, while also giving us a chance to catch up with friends and have some fun. We would also like to give a massive thank you to all the teachers and Peer Mentors who helped organise and run the day.

On Tuesday, 7th May, a group of Grade 9/10 students attended a Writing Workshop with award-winning author Martin Chatterton. Martin Chatterton works in the creative fields of writing, illustrating and design and has a history of significant projects.
The workshop involved sharing stories and discussing various writing tips. It was a fun and interesting experience for the students involved. Martin talked about taking inspiration from various sources such as real life or personal experiences, or other authors and existing works when writing. He also highlighted the importance of writing with passion and exploring human emotions to strengthen creativity. This was an extremely rewarding and educational opportunity.

Presentation – Martin Chatterton
Award winning author, designer, illustrator, poet, screen writer and director Martin Chatterton entertained Year 7 and 8 classes and their teachers on Tuesday 7th May. Chatterton shared his considerable experience to inspire students to be creative and take all opportunities made available. He demonstrated his art skills by drawing caricatures of students and teachers whilst entertaining the audience with amusing anecdotes. Martin provided an insight into the creation of his current novel Scorpion Falls, from where he got his ideas and inspiration to how the story was written by first creating a film trailer. Martin’s involvement in a range of creative pursuits from animation, video game development, writing and film making, makes him a knowledgeable and engaging presenter who entertained each cohort for over an hour.

Our names are Megan and Lily and we are a part of Riverside’s 2024 Prefect Board. We have both been enjoying our roles as Prefects so far and are looking forward to organising and running many new and exciting events with the board for the remainder of the year. To get to know us better, here is some information about us.
I'm Megan and I am a member of the Learning, Aspiration and Endeavour Portfolio, which focuses on the academic and arts areas of our school. I share this role with Elaria, Emily, Issy, Isaac and Gemma and we work together to organise opportunities like competitions, events and challenges, with an aim to make school fun for everyone.
As someone who strives for excellence, being in a leadership position has been a goal of mine for many years and it has been an incredible feeling to progress towards it over my time at Riverside High. I spent almost all of Grade 9 picturing with anticipation, the moment that I would open the letter telling me what this year would look like, and I was so happy to see the word prefect on that page. I am honoured to be a member of the 2024 Prefect Board, working in this team of talented and incredible leaders, and I cannot wait to see what the rest of the year will hold for us.
I love school and enjoy many subjects, with Science being my favourite (and Maths in a close second!) I spend my free time doing art, reading, writing, listening to music, and doing dance as a hobby. As a leader I am inspired by values such as aspiration and endeavour, by always striving to be the best version of myself and endeavouring to achieve my goals. I am so excited for the rest of this year, and I hope that everyone at our school will enjoy it too.
I’m Lily and I am a member of the Community and Respect Portfolio alongside Daisy, Emelia, Estella, Finn, Kacey, and Ryan. I can still remember just how nervous I was stepping onto the school grounds for the first time, a Grade 7 with my shiny new school shoes and uniform that was a couple of sizes too big. It took some adjusting to the new environment, especially coming from a small feeder school, but with the support from newly found friendships, teachers, and school leaders, the nerves were quickly left behind. I have come a long way since that day and will forever be grateful for the opportunities that have shaped the person I am today. My goal as a member of the Prefect Board is to make Riverside High’s School environment as welcoming and positive as possible, and to ensure every single student believes in their potential and that they can do anything they put their mind to.
In my spare time I enjoy creating art, reading, doing puzzles, and playing with my cat. My favourite subjects at school are Art and Maths, but I love learning new topics and ideas across all subjects. A big part of my identity for many years was that I was an elite swimmer, representing the state many times, but I decided at the end of 2022 that I was ready for the next chapter. Since then, I have been coaching for my club, and will soon be a fully accredited coach. This opportunity has completely changed my life, as I truly enjoy assisting the swimmers and giving back to the club. Now that I’m in Grade 10 and in a major leadership role, I can give back to the school. I want all students’ voices to be heard, so we can cater to everyone’s individual needs and hold events that all students are interested in. I look forward to the rest of this year, and I hope everyone has an amazing 2024!
