Thank you to our student leaders and students who attended the Remembrance Day Service held in Launceston on Saturday the 11th of November. The Riverside High School Prefect Board laid a wreath on behalf of our school. On Remembrance Day, commemorative services are held across Australia at local community centres and war memorials. Students attended the service in Launceston. This is the time to remember a relative, friend or ancestor, or reflect on the sacrifice of those who have served and died at war.
2023 Year 6 Orientation Day
On Wednesday, 23rd of November Year 6 students participated in Riverside High School’s Orientation Day. Students were able to make new friends, experience a range of different learning areas including Languages, Foods, HPE, STEM and Science. At lunch time a barbecue was provided for the Year 6 students along with them being able to socialise and make connections with the Year 9 Peer Mentors. Karen Dudley, AST is the Transition Coordinator for Riverside High School who liaises with our Associate Primary Schools. Turning up Matters
We all want the best for our children – for their futures to be as bright as possible. Showing up every day to school really matters. It gives your child every chance to learn, grow and find their interests.
This last stretch of the school year can sometimes be tricky. Keep it up, because each day is another chance to:
- be around friends
- learn new things
- find interests
- create dream futures (whatever that may be!).
If you’re looking for tips on how to create better attendance habits, visit the Anything can happen website.
Please always talk to us if you’re having trouble getting your child to school. We’re here to help.

Subject in Focus – Career Awareness Program (CAP)
It has been a big year for our CAP students! After applying to be in the course late last year, our enthusiastic group, who are keen to explore career pathways, have had the opportunity to engage in a range of work-based learning.
In 2023 our Grade 10s were given the opportunity to engage with the Beacon Foundation in their Career Readiness Program. This pilot program has been delivered by Nick Humphreys and has a focus of developing students' career confidence by helping them understand their skills and strengths and where they might best fit in the world of work.
The program culminated this week with a celebration of their achievements, including work placements, in a graduation ceremony and lunch featuring members of the community who supported our students.
Students participated in a number of activities in the classroom as well as site tours across a range of industries. Feedback from employers on how our students engaged with their experience has been extremely positive as some reinforced what they wish to pursue post-high school.
Next year's program is currently being formulated with Grade 9 students applying for the class that will commence in Term 1.

Riverside High Swimming Carnival 2023
On Wednesday, 9th November, Riverside High held its annual Swimming Carnival at the Launceston Aquatic Centre. It was the first time since 2019 that a whole school swimming carnival has been held.
The main emphasis of our school Swimming Carnival is participation and having lots of fun. To support and encourage more students to participate at this year’s carnival, the water slide was operating, and novelty events such as water basketball, handstand competitions and treasure hunts were organised and led by the Health and Wellbeing Prefects. This ensured our students had lots of different activities to participate in, regardless of their swimming ability.
House spirit was well and truly alive throughout the day, with students decked out in their House colours, loud house chants and lots of positive support for peers and teammates in evidence.
There are many outstanding individual swimming performances across all four year levels. It was wonderful to witness many students stepping outside their comfort zone and participating in swimming races, whether it be Division 1 races over 50m or Division 2 races over 25m.
The Swimming Champions for 2023 are:
Year 7 | Year 8 | Year 9 | Year 10 | |
Girls | Isobel | Chilli | Matilda | Poppy |
Boys | Oliver | Kodi | Oryn | Logan |
All students are to be congratulated on the outstanding way they participated and supported each other throughout the day. It made for a hugely successful Swimming Carnival.
As always, there is a friendly rivalry between the four Houses of Kingsford Smith, Monash, Lawson, and Forrest.
The final House placings for 2023 are:
First | Kingsford Smith | 1665 |
Second | Monash | 1542 |
Third | Forrest | 883 |
Fourth | Lawson | 806 |
We would like to thank the staff at the Launceston Aquatic Centre for hosting us and for the support they provided regarding the set-up of the event.
We would also like to thank the families who were able to make it along to support their children.
Congratulations to the following students who, based on their performances at our Swimming Carnival, have earned selection to represent Riverside High at the NHSSA Inter-High Swimming Carnival on Friday, 17th November, at the Launceston Aquatic Centre:

High School Netball State Finals
On Friday, 10th November, Riverside High took a team of talented netballers to Ulverstone to compete in the Schools State Netball Championships finishing second in the state overall.
An early 7:30am start didn’t concern our boys as they hit the court strong in Round One, coming away with the win in a physical game against Penguin. Round Two saw another fantastic display of athleticism from both teams with our boys taking away another strong win against St Aloysuis, 27-17. The semi-final against Ulverstone was no easy feat, our boys knew that USC would be looking to win their place in the top two. We kept to our game plan; possession netball, remembered our set plays and worked together as a team. USC only scored one goal in the second quarter and nothing in the third, allowing Riverside High School to take so much of a lead that closing the margin would be almost impossible. Riverside High School took the win, 29-15 cementing their spot in the grand final.
We are proud of our boys finishing in second place against Sacred Heart. They demonstrated tremendous passion and commitment to their team throughout the whole season and were commended by other schools’ teaching staff on their composure when winning and sportsmanship during tough matches.
Special mention to the superstar coaching team (Sophie, Mia, Erin, Mollie and Mia).

F1 in Schools Student Mentoring
Over the last three weeks, our F1 in School’s students who will be representing Tasmania at the National Finals in March 2024 have been fortunate in having some amazing learning opportunities.
On Thursday, 2nd November, Jono and Taihlaura from Kingthing Marketing visited our school to spend time mentoring one of our F1 teams, Zenith, in the areas of digital marketing, graphic design and portfolio layout. The students gained a stronger understanding of what is required to present their work in a professional manner and how to build their digital presence along with ways to promote businesses who have offered them support. The support was certainly appreciated by the students in this team.
On Thursday, 9th November, Justine Street, Trent and Joel who work at Collective Consulting spent several hours working with the design students and providing them with the skills to begin creating architectural designs using Autodesk Revit. Through the development of these skills, students will be able to design their trade displays to architectural standards and then export rendered images as augmented reality files. This software is complex to learn, so the support of Justine, Trent and Joel has made a significant difference in our students’ learning.
On Friday, 10th November, Muhammad and Cristian who are engineers working at Rio Tinto Aluminium worked with our engineering students discussing how to improve portfolio content and interview techniques in order to better address the competition criteria and therefore improve their ability to obtain higher scores.
On Thursday, 16th November, Eric (a lecturer at the AMC), and Samantha (a past Riverside High student who has just completed her Engineering Degree at the AMC) spent several hours with our students discussing aerodynamic principles, the application of physics equations to the refinement of car designs and the analysis of virtual data on car performance through the use of ANSYS simulations.
The support of all of these people has been greatly appreciated and the knowledge our students have gained over the last three weeks will be invaluable to their ongoing goal of winning at the National Final next year.

Hello! My name is Tara and I’m one of your Social Workers at Riverside High. I have just started this term and have come from Newstead College where I worked for the last six years, in addition to Launceston College for the past couple of terms.
I am passionate about supporting young people through these transitional times in life when things are changing so rapidly and there is a split focus on managing the right now, while always looking forward and planning for the future. I can assist in lots of different ways from supporting the development of coping skills, to connecting with services and resources and always through having a chat and a laugh.
I work confidentially and always in the best interest of the young person, prioritising safety, wellbeing and connection to education. When you see me out and around the school, please say hello!

On Friday, 10th November, the NHSSA Golf Day was held at the Launceston Golf Club. Riverside High had five representatives. They were: Charlie, Finn, Colby, Jack and Thomas.
To qualify for the tournament, players had to have a golf handicap of under 22. The conditions on the day were conducive for good scores, with bright sunshine and no wind. The course did prove to be challenging, with fairways lined with trees making them feel quite narrow. Despite this, the condition of the course was magnificent and this combined with the talent of the golfers, to result in some excellent scores being achieved.
Despite playing good golf, Riverside were outplayed by Scotch and St Pats to finish the day’s competition in 3rd place. The students who participated had a very enjoyable day and they cannot wait for the 2024 tournament.

The NHSSA Inter-High Swimming Carnival was held in Term 4 at the Launceston Aquatic Centre. It was wonderful to be back at the pool again and to have our students competing against the best swimmers from rival schools.
Riverside went into the day’s competition holding the Junior Shield and Overall Shields.
Riverside High started off the day strongly winning two events and finishing second in the Medley Relays. We also had several 1st places in the 50m Freestyle events, however by the halfway mark, Prospect were leading the way in the Overall Shield.
It is in Riverside’s nature to find a way and despite fatigue starting to become a factor due to some students swimming up to seven races over the course of the day, members of the team from Years 9 and 10 started to find the wall first and Riverside overtook Prospect in the race for the Senior Shield.
Going into the last events of the day, the 4 x 50m relays, Riverside were 30 points behind Prospect in the race for the Overall Shield. This was as close as we had been all day and there was a genuine belief that we could finish strongly in the relays and secure the Overall Shield. With relays worth double points, Riverside came home strongly winning four of the eight 4 x 50m freestyle relays. The Year 9 girls relay team broke a long standing NHSSA Inter-High record posting a time of 2:13:10 to win by three-quarters of a pool length.
As the race meet wrapped up, there was a high level of anticipation amongst the swimmers from all schools, as we waited for the results to be announced. Riverside were announced as finishing fourth in the Junior Shield and second to Prospect in the Senior Shield and Overall Shields.
However, there was to be twist when the results of the day were closely analysed by the NHSSA. Riverside were announced as the winners of the Senior Shield after a disqualification, giving the team one shield to take back to school.
It was impressive to witness how the students carried themselves throughout the day and the respect that they showed towards their competitors.
Congratulations to all members of the Riverside High swim team for the way that you competed and equally importantly, for the way that you conducted yourselves on the day.

Remembrance Day is considered a solemn time of reflection. Respect is paid to those who took a stand and committed their lives to defend the freedoms we enjoy today. Riverside High School, represented by five Prefects and Ms Saunders, continued a long-standing tradition by attending this year’s Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Cenotaph. The day got off to a bright start with a clear and sunny morning. As we arrived, the ceremony began with speeches reminding us of the importance of the occasion, encouraging listeners to ponder commemorate and celebrate the sacrifice of our heroes gone by. After the speeches, it was time for Riverside High School, along with many other groups, to lay a wreath and pay their respect. Isha and Jack, our head Prefects, took the honour of laying the wreath on behalf of Riverside High School.
Remembrance Day is a fire. The fire does not need oxygen, but rather the support of its nation’s people. It does not only burn for one day of the year - every single day it is alive. We must see the light, the warmth of its flames. We must not let it go out. We must not forget. Let’s educate one another and the coming generations. Let’s take time out of our busy lives to remember our fathers, mothers, dear friends, and relatives who have sacrificed their very lives to protect our future. Lest We Forget.

We wanted to take a moment to remind you about the importance of paying school bus fares. Not only does it help ensure that the school bus system runs smoothly and efficiently, but it’s also a matter of fairness.
We understand that sometimes students may forget their bus fare or may not have the money to pay on a particular day. If this happens, there are procedures that can be followed. The bus company will allow the student to ride the bus and pay the fare the next day by filling out an IPOU token. Another option is for the student to borrow cash from a friend if they cannot pay the fare on a particular day. It’s important to note that specific IOU procedures may vary depending on the bus company that provides the service.
If your family is experiencing financial hardship, please reference the following which has links to supported bus fares:
