We hope you all had an enjoyable and restful holiday. The days are getting longer, brighter, and warmer. It was wonderful to see so many students in full school uniform to start the term. A reminder that winter sport has now finished, and the sports uniform is not to be worn to school please. Thank you to parents/guardians for reinforcing this message.
Term 4 is extremely busy, so we encourage you all to read our school calendar of events. This can be seen by downloading the SZapp or riversidehs.schoolzineplus.com/calendar.
Years 11/12 – 2024
Riverside High School will again be offering VET Certificate II in Civil Constructions in 2024. It is most important that VET courses focus on engagement, retention and achievement and connect to future employment options. In consultation with DECYP and Tas TAFE, a skills shortage was identified in ‘Civil Constructions.’ In 2023 Riverside High School partnered with Tas TAFE to provide Civil Constructions VET Certificate II. Please see attached documentation on Civil Constructions for 2024. The certificate II course is not offered at any of the local Colleges. The course operates from the Riverside High School MDT area with some lessons being held at Tas TAFE. Attached to this week’s newsletter is a flyer which provides further information about the 11/12 VET course along with the units which are proposed for 2024. If your son or daughter is currently interested in enrolling in the VET course for 2024, please contact Mr Rohan Pooley at Riverside High School on the above number ASAP as places are filling up quickly. The course runs for one day a week.
Duty of Care – Before School
Teachers have ‘Duty of Care’ from 8:30am each morning on the school site. Students accessing the Breakfast Club have permission to be in the School Café from 8:15am. If students are being transported by bus to Riverside High School, they are to come directly to school and get off the bus at the school bus turning circle. Students should only be accessing the Riverside Shopping Complex and shops with their parent/guardian and/or parent/guardian permission before school. It is also critical that all students arrive in time for the start of Home Group at 8:45am each morning as important information is given out and organisational and pastoral care matters are addressed during this time.
Swimming Carnival
Riverside High’s Swimming Carnival is planned for Week 4 and will be held at the Launceston Aquatic Centre for all students in Years 7-10. The carnival will focus on participation, having fun and making connections. To ensure swimming carnivals continue into the future, we encourage all students to attend the carnival and participate in the competitive and/or novelty events. This is the first time that Riverside High School has had a whole school swimming carnival since 2019 due to COVID and we want to make it a carnival of participation and fun. Further information about the swimming carnival and transport arrangements to and from the Aquatic Centre will be communicated next week.
PAT Testing
PAT testing is required of all students in Prep to Year 10. PAT testing is completed within the testing period from 23rd October to 10th November. Students at Riverside High School sit PAT Reading, Maths and Science tests. These tests provide us with invaluable information regarding students’ academic progress and how we can best support their learning. Where required, adjustments are provided for students to support access to the tests and encourage maximum participation. This may include adjusting the testing year level. All students can complete the tests on their iPad or school device. Ms Jago and Mr Gadsby coordinate PAT testing at Riverside High School. If you have any questions in relation to the testing, please contact them via our Administration Office.
2024 Student Leadership Positions
Last term, students in Year 9 who expressed an interest in becoming a Prefect and/or Peer Mentor in 2024 were involved in a Leadership Learning Day held at the Tailrace. Students had an opportunity to work in small groups and collaborate to solve scenarios, ask questions of the panel of Prefect Executives in attendance and listen to guest speakers. Well done to all the students involved for the way in which they represented our school whilst out in the community and we wish all students involved in the leadership process the best of luck. Students who were successful in the first half of the selection process will be presenting their speeches on Tuesday, 7th November which will be followed by the voting process.

State/National Representation
Riverside High School often has students who are successful in making state, national and representative teams in the arts, sports, and academic pursuits. We would love to share and celebrate the successes of our currently enrolled students in our fortnightly newsletter. Please contact our Administration Team if you are happy to share your child’s achievements.
School Parking for Visitors and Parent/Guardians
At the end of the school day, we have a large amount of traffic in the school. A reminder to parents and guardians to drive slowly and please ensure that you are parking in the dedicated parking bays only and that you are not obstructing buses. The school buses must be able to enter and exit the turning circle to ensure they collect and drop off students at the allocated times. Your understanding is appreciated.
Second Hand Uniform
The school greatly appreciates the donation of second-hand uniform items that families have provided. If you have a second-hand uniform that you are willing to donate to the school, it can be left at the Administration Office. Winter and Summer uniforms and sports uniforms are all needed and greatly appreciated!

Riverside High School Swimming Carnival 2023
The 2023 Riverside High School Swimming Carnival will be held at the Launceston Aquatic Centre on Wednesday, 8th November 2023.
The Swimming Carnival involves all students in Years 7-10. All students are expected to attend and participate in the non-competitive novelty events and/or the traditional swimming events. The water slide will also operate on the day.
Students must wear their Riverside High School sports uniform on the day or their House t-shirt. House colours will be on display!
Transport to Aquatic Centre
Students are asked to make their own way to the Launceston Aquatic Centre on the day and arrive at 8:35am and their own way home again after being dismissed from the pool at 3:10pm.
Students who travel on the Manion’s bus service to Riverside High from areas such as Legana, Gravelly Beach and Grindelwald, as well as students who have no other way of making their own way to and from the Aquatic Centre, will have the opportunity to catch a bus from school to the Launceston Aquatic Centre on the morning. The buses will leave RHS in the morning at 8:35am and at the end of the day the buses will leave the Aquatic Centre at 2:40pm and arrive back at school by 3:10pm so students can catch their normal bus home.
To access this service students must return the permission form located at the bottom of a letter which has been distributed and return it to the student Administration Office by Wednesday, 1st November. The permission slip only needs to be returned if your child requires transport to and from the LAC.
If a student has not returned a permission slip, unfortunately, they will not be able to access this service. This procedure is required as a duty of care and to allow the correct number of buses to be booked according to the number of students wishing to access the service.
Arrival at Aquatic Centre
When students arrive at the Launceston Aquatic Centre, they are required to make their way directly into the pool area, via the back entrance, to meet with their Home Group teacher to have their attendance taken. Home Group signs will be clearly visible. Grade 7’s will be located at the shallow end of the 50m competition pool, through to Grade 10 at the deep end.
Recess and Lunch
We encourage students to bring a packed lunch for the day; however, the Grade 10 Council will run a BBQ, with drinks also available.
Please note, while the CUBE café will be open to the public on the day, the cafe will NOT be available for students to access.
Parent/Guardian Helpers
If you are available to assist on the day in recording results, judging, etc it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Toby Musovic at Riverside High on 6327 6333 if you are able to assist.
Throughout the carnival, the expectation is that mobile phones are off and away all day.
Students unable to participate for any reason are encouraged to see Mr Musovic to be allocated a job for the day.
The NHSSA Inter-High Carnival will be held on Friday, 17th November. More details will be provided to your child if they are selected in the Riverside High School Swimming Team.
We are looking forward to the Riverside High School Swimming Carnival and we
hope to see all students showing support for their House by wearing their House colours on the day.
Spectators are most welcome and we encourage you to come along and support your child at what promises to be a very enjoyable day.

Sharing of Evidence of Student Learning
As you are aware, this year we have been sharing samples of student work or evidences of learning with families. This evidence of learning may include: pieces of writing, tests, photographs of work, pieces of artwork or recordings of a student’s performance.
As mentioned in previous newsletters, teachers of Grade 7 half-year courses which are studied in the second part of the year will also be sharing an evidence of student learning in Term 4. This evidence of learning will be shared with you by Friday, 17th November.
We would greatly appreciate your support in discussing this evidence of learning with your child. Please feel free to contact the relevant subject teacher if you have questions about the work sample and feedback which has been sent home. We are extremely keen to work in partnership with all our families to support our students to reach their full potential, so we are always very keen to hear from you.

Beacon Foundation Site Tours with CAP class
As part of the Career Awareness Program this year, students have been participating in the Beacon Foundation's Career Readiness pilot program.
A valuable component of the course is engaging with industry inside and outside of the classroom. Students have enjoyed a day exploring three worksites in a range of trade areas.
First up Kyle from Zanetto Builders showed the group around a high-end build nearing completion in Riverside. Next was a trip to Western Junction as Tate from Haywards showed the class what metal fabrication is and the many large projects they have worked on. Finally, Anthony and the team at Randalls Equipment explained how their work as mechanics differs from those in a workshop as they are on the road for the majority of their jobs.
It was a wonderful experience for our students to see the worksites in action. We would like to thank the businesses for hosting our students and the work that Nick from the Beacon Foundation has put into facilitating a rewarding program. Students can now look forward to upcoming work placements.
Mr Adam Child
CAP Teacher
On Wednesday, 18th October, two grade 10 teams competed in the 2nd annual Parrots Cup at Windsor Park.
The tournament was run by Bridgenorth Football Club with Launceston Christian School and Exeter High School also invited to compete as the three High Schools in the West Tamar Community.
It was a very successful day with Riverside High School winning both Cups in the boys and girls divisions, making it back to back Parrots Cups for both teams. The boys’ team lost their first game by two points against Launceston Christian School and then won against Exeter High School convincingly by 40 points. This saw them through to the final against Launceston Christian School, kicking into a strong wind in the first half. A close margin at half time, Riverside High School then had the wind advantage and they were able to take advantage of this, kicking away to a 40-point win. Logan and Sam were too strong in the forward line, kicking some great, entertaining goals. This was an excellent team effort with the added achievement of Lucas winning player of the final.
The girls’ team won their first game against Launceston Christian School by 20 points and were lucky to hold onto to a three point lead against Exeter High School in the second game. They met Launceston Christian School in the final and also had the tough wind in the first half and were unable to score and Launceston Christian School kicked 17 points. The team rallied and wanted to make the most of the wind, managing to hold Launceston Christian School in our attacking half. With about eight minutes to go we still hadn’t kicked a goal until Izzy kicked the first, lifting team spirits. Still needing two goals with less than five minutes remaining, we almost needed a miracle. Shelby then kicked a cracking goal to put Riverside High School within one point with only seconds remaining. Riverside High School managed to get the ball into the forward 50 quickly and Shelby again kicked towards goal, only to be marked in front of goals by Poppy with the final whistle being blown three seconds later. A 50m penalty was then awarded putting her directly in front of the goals with the entire Launceston Christian School team on the goal line and all of Riverside High School behind Poppy. In all the excitement and cheering, Poppy kicked a goal after full time to win the Cup by five points! This was an unforgettable game for the girls.
Well done to all students involved!
Jacinta Hall and James Beardwood
Lacey competed at the Mountain Bike Nationals in Victoria. She managed to finish an extremely impressive second in very trying conditions. Crashing twice on Stage One (potentially breaking her hand) and continuing on with a few more crashes to complete another five stages and still get on the podium. Well done Lacey!
Patyn recently entered a dress design competition (REDRESSED: ReFashion Show 2023). She was the youngest in the competition with other contestants being 16 and 17 years old.
She made an outfit out of two second hand pieces of clothing winning the following awards:
Under 18 Ability to be Replicated
Under 18 Circular Design and Sustainability
Patyn won a prize for a two-hour tour and shadowing experience at The Spotted Quoll Factory and Studio in Launceston and will receive mentoring from a fashion designer.
Subject in Focus – Technologies – Applied Design
Within Technologies Applied Design we have endeavoured to engage students on many levels. From Year 7 to 10 we have observed students developing key skills and personal attributes such as – being organised, applying safe work practices and remaining task focused. In particular, we have noticed students willing to challenge themselves by being active problem solvers.
Classes in Year 7 investigated and pushed the boundaries of a range of materials, namely wood, plastics and metal. Exploration of materials has occurred via small individual projects, such as kitchen utensils, key holders, barbecue tools and wooden toys.
Students in Year 7 have achieved a high standard in their project work. Each lesson we have experienced students taking on challenges, so they achieve well designed projects that fulfill a particular function.
Students were introduced to the concepts of sustainability and quality control. Ideally, students are more discerning in regard to the function and form of objects they purchase or use every day.
Year 8 has had a productive year. Five differing classes have undertaken a range of projects that have been innovative and engaging on a personal level. The Applied Design subject has produced well-designed metal tools and a dice. This project required high levels of skill in the use of Oxy Acetylene to accurately fuse metal together.
During Term 4 students are designing a multi-purpose step stool. This requires planning and high level of organisation.
The senior classes of Metal have been introduced to new technologies in the form of TIG welding and in the use of a Plasma cutter. This enables students to extend their manufacturing skills. Students produced fire pits and weathervanes. As a result of the complexity of these projects students were required to demonstrate persistence and forward planning.
Design in Wood is a senior subject. Within this subject students have sought to develop skills that are aimed at exploring the limitations of wood and developing design skills that will allow them to produce well-made yet functional projects. Planning projects with costings and detailed steps was an area that was focused on this year. Year 9 students developed a stool whilst the Year 10 students took on planning and manufacturing a cabinet. Students were encouraged to use sustainable material in the form of plantation hardwood, donated by the University of Tasmania’s, School of Architecture
Finally, students studying Housing Design, have had the challenge of designing a one-bedroom studio based on a shipping container. An architectural program called Sketchup was used to develop a 3D model. This involved studying the components of a simple dwelling, a site analysis, passive solar design and the use of new materials in a modern house.
Students will be constructing a small cubby house made of timber framing and corrugated iron. This exercise was intended to introduce students to skills of home maintenance and basic home construction.
Within short courses such as Applied Design in Wood and Metal, students have shown that, with effort and determination, they can construct projects such as small tables and kitchen organisers.
Overall, despite the challenges of staff movement, namely Mr Freeman who was a very valued and highly skilled teacher of Applied Design, students have adapted and move forward, the success of students studying Technologies -Applied Design have been wonderfully supported by Mr Stabb and Mr Mortimer.
