Dear Parents/Guardians
Riverside High School’s Presentation Evening was a wonderful celebration event which highlighted the amazing achievements of students in Years 7 to 10. We thank the special guests, donors, sponsors and business and industry representatives and our families for supporting the evening. The award recipients are listed in this week’s newsletter. Students were recognised for academic achievement, effort, progress, community involvement and leadership. The opportunity to move back to an evening event where parents and guardians could attend along with special guests made the night very special. I would like to congratulate all students who were acknowledged.
The staff would like to congratulate our Year 10 students on the polite and respectful way they have interacted with each other over the past week for all of the special Year 10 events. The dinner at the Grand Chancellor was a very enjoyable evening where staff and students were able to socialise, laugh and celebrate students’ time at high school. I would especially like to thank the Year 10 teaching team for the organisation of the evening which was led by Mr Adrian Smith - Assistant Principal, Miss Kate Huddleston - AST/Grade Leader and Mr Toby Musovic - Grade Leader. As I mentioned at the dinner, I haven’t had the pleasure of working and learning with this year group over the past four years, but I know that the school community believe that they are an amazing group of students who will continue to succeed and achieve their dreams after leaving Riverside High School.
Grade Assemblies were held on Monday and again we had a number of parents/guardians attending the celebration assemblies. Students were recognised for their outstanding academic performance and effort in the End of Year Reporting phase. Certificates of Outstanding Academic Achievement and Merit Certificates for Outstanding Application to Studies were presented. Music performances at each of the assemblies showcased the talents of our students and we thank all performers. Please see attached photos from the celebration assemblies.
Given it’s the end of school year we always have staff to farewell. Some of our teaching staff are moving to new teaching roles and others to retirement. Riverside High School would like to thank the following teachers for their passion, motivation and commitment to our school - we farewell Mr Justin Young, who has worked part-time in our Music Department in 2022 and assisted at many of our school events including Battle of The Bands, Miss Tyeisha Hinds who is moving to Port Dalrymple School, Mr Harrison Hughes who has a position at Lilydale District School, Ms Naomi Hack who will be moving to Prospect High School, Ms Mikhala Graham who is moving to Kings Meadows High School and Mr Dan Chapman who will be moving to Brooks High School. Our School Chaplain, Rebekah Dilger, has just graduated from university with a teaching degree and so we farewell her as a member of the support team and Vicki Eadie, who is one of the longest serving teachers at Riverside High School, will be retiring. We would like to thank Mrs Eadie for her passion, commitment and long-term service at Riverside High School and the amazing Home Economics Department she was able to create at our school and her passion for the learning area and students.
Thank you to all teaching staff for your care, dedication and passion for our school. We have a wonderful team of teachers, leaders and non-teaching staff who are fully committed to making a positive difference to the lives of our young people.
Have a wonderful Christmas and a safe and happy holiday!
Ms Jeanna Bolton
Subject in Focus - 2022 Care Centre
To best support student learning, we welcome invited students into our safe and caring environment in small groups and at break times where they enjoy socialising, games and activities, scheduled computer time and quality downtime in our calming breakout space.
The Care Centre offers classes and small groups in literacy and numeracy, social skills and English as an Additional Language while Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups are facilitated by the effervescent Jodi Flakemore and our wise Aboriginal Education Support Officer, Nindarra Wheatley.
In the literacy and numeracy groups, each student is provided with their own work box containing a wide range of tasks in both hard copy and digital formats aimed at progressing their current learning. They undertake these self-paced tasks with teachers and teacher assistants working ‘at their shoulder’ to enhance their learning. Lessons may incorporate literacy, numeracy, social or fine and gross motor skills activities, selected with respect to the aims of the individual in attendance.
Our social skills groups support students’ social understandings by assisting them to know their strengths, improve their communication skills and foster friendships. Our talented team design programs which include self-esteem and self-awareness building, communication development and teamwork. Art, craft, cooking, gardening and games are just some of the many activities through which this learning is achieved.
It is one of our immense privileges to watch some of our students’ progress from needing a little extra support to becoming virtual teacher assistants, focusing their time on supporting others achieve their best in the Care Centre.
We would like to acknowledge the magnificent work of our 2022 teacher assistants in both the Care Centre and classrooms providing unwavering support and critical guidance for our students. Thank you to our staff team and our amazing students who are a privilege to support; they epitomise Courage, Aspiration, Respect and Endeavour.
Mr Darren Hanson
All good things must come to an end – and so has our Ascent (Achieve, Strength, Courage, Empowerment and Nurture Together) program at the PCYC.
We have had a spectacular time and have been able to develop some new friendships, explore and discuss possible barriers that could affect our lives and stepped outside our comfort zones by participating in some amazing activities.
We did some Trampolining, went Sailing, swam in the AMC Survival pool, participated in Yoga, played Archery Tag and tested ourselves on the High Ropes Course at Hollybank.
We would like to acknowledge the PCYC and in particular Hari and Justine for running this awesome program. Much thanks also goes to the Cheesecake shop for donating us a whole cheesecake every week and to Coles Newstead for providing us with a yummy lunch.

STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Maths)
This term, using the design process and the skills learnt throughout the year in STEM, students developed their own pinball machine. They first sketched, trialled and tested the mechanisms needed to have functioning flippers and a plunger. Using their knowledge of 3D printers and angles, students printed and placed bumpers, ramps and return lanes in specific locations so they functioned correctly in game. Some parts of the pinball machines were made in wood, by first creating a design in the LaserBox software and then having this design cut out using the fine precision of the mechanical laser. After a lot of trial and error, Wes, Jack and Dylan won the award for engineering mastery in the field of STEM. Other than the pinball machine, there have been other smaller projects. This included the creation of a fully functional game controller, made from either, cardboard, laser cut wood or 3D printed plastic, to navigate Minecraft. With a little coding knowledge and creativity, Clay’s controller ended up being a fully functional electric guitar. Finally, using soldering skills and electric motors, students made their own functioning hovercraft.

Good morning everyone. At the very beginning of the year, Nikitha and I stood before you (virtually) on behalf of the Prefect Board to deliver our pledge to you.
We pledged to create an inclusive environment and new opportunities; to celebrate individuality and diversity; to promote learning for life; to build relationships; and to make your voice heard.
We've faced many obstacles to realise these goals, but the payoffs have been well worth it.
Throughout the year, we attended a range of leadership forums to develop our ideas and teamwork skills. We started with the GRIP Conference in Term 1, which gave us initiative and ideas to make an impact; the Tasmanian Youth Forum in Term 2 opened our eyes to a range of issues affecting young people, including mental health learning. In Term 3, we were able to communicate messaging to the school around sun safety after the Cancer Council SunSmart workshop.
Volunteering our time for a range of community initiatives and school events helped us to further develop our leadership skills. We delivered phone books on behalf of the council, participated in the ANZAC Day Parade and Remembrance Day Service; protested against elder abuse; coordinated a team for the very memorable Relay For Life; and ran the Bunnings BBQ for a day.
Within the school, we hosted a morning tea to build connections and celebrate our teaching staff. We assisted at parent-teacher nights; helped run science week activities; held house challenges at the recent Athletics Carnival; and of course, we frequently donned our high vis vests for car parking duties.
All of these experiences helped inform our own initiatives and activities, allowing us to make a greater impact within our roles. We started the year by raising awareness and funds for our sponsor child, Nitin, and are proud to have been supporting his community for over five years now. Then, Harmony Week celebrated the diversity that enriches our school and Relay for Life brought the community together.
In Term 2, Arts Week and drama competitions celebrated the wide array of talent we have at Riverside. Pride Week and karaoke brought our community closer even as COVID restrictions remained tight. Term 3 started with the Can Drive, where every morning we were staggering under the weight of your generous donations. We participated in the 40-Hour Famine to walk in the shoes of refugees; and launched the Student Voice podcast, creating over 10 episodes to promote belonging and raise awareness. Term 3 also brought our biggest event of the year; the Big Freeze was a highlight of 2022 and brought the whole Riverside community together.
Finally, in Term 4, we held our highly successful silent auction and finished planning for our outdoor stage. We finished by holding Christmas events in Week 8 for some final fun to round off the year.
For many of these events, we were not just able to bring the school together and make memories, but also raise awareness and funds for a wide range of charities.
It's been a huge year. Thank you everyone for your support of our initiatives and for making your ideas known. It's been our absolute privilege to serve the community throughout this year. We wish you a safe and happy holidays. Thank you.
