Welcome to Week 8. Term 3 has been extremely busy with sport finals, excursions, Grade 6 transition and orientation days. Our students have represented Riverside High School with pride in the community and we continue to receive positive feedback regarding our students’ wearing full school uniform, their engagement in extra-curricular activities and their positive and respectful behaviour.
Battle Of the Bands
On Friday, 2nd September Riverside High School held ‘Battle of The Bands 2022’. Thank you to the parents/guardians and family members who supported the evening which was held at the Door of Hope. The evening provided an opportunity for students in Years 7 to 10 to showcase their amazing talents in Music and perform on the big stage. The student crowd was extremely supportive of performers and it was wonderful to see the energy and motivation of students performing at their very best. A very big thank you to all of the Music teachers who co-ordinated the evening. Congratulations to the band Zapperheads Bailey L 10B, Robbie S 10G, Noah K 10D and Theo P 10D and the acoustic duo Taj B 10G and Ruby R 10D who won their respective sections. These students then represented Riverside High at the Northern Finals on Friday, 9th September, with Zapperheads placing first. They will now be competing in the Battle of the Bands, State Final this Friday night.
LAPD Day
Grade 9 students last Friday attended Newstead College to participate in the Riverside High School LAPD Day. The day provides students with the opportunity to collaborate, solve problems and learn about what it means to be a leader. Class teachers of Grade 9 were involved in the day assisting each of the groups. Riverside High School received wonderful feedback from Newstead on student behaviour and presentation at the College.
Senior NHSSA Sport
Riverside High School senior sports teams made the NHSSA Grand Finals in Football, Netball, Hockey and Soccer. I had the opportunity to attend the finals and all students displayed outstanding sportsmanship, motivation and skills in their chosen sport. A report from each of the senior teams is included in the newsletter this week. Thank you to the teachers who coached and umpired and the parents/guardians who were able to support during the year. We are looking forward to our Grade 8 students joining the NHSSA Thursday roster in 2023.
Grade 10 Transition Program
Grade 10 students continue to be provided with opportunities to develop their understandings of post Grade 10 options for study and College. Students had an opportunity to attend both the Launceston College and Newstead College Transition Days and the Northern Urban Collective offerings for 2023. It is most important that students choose a pathway that best meets their learning needs and future career aspirations. We encourage all students to ask questions and fully engage in the opportunities being offered. Further information will be provided soon in relation to College enrolment days.
NAPLAN and Student Reports
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) reports for students in Years 7 and 9 who sat the national tests this year have been sent home this week. Please watch out for this in the mail. Your child’s report will show national information including how your child performed in relation to other students in their particular year group and in comparison, to the national average score for each of the Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy tests. Over the coming weeks we will be looking closely at our NAPLAN data and using this to inform and guide our teaching and learning. Please contact us if you would like to discuss any aspect of the report.
Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews
In 2022 we have scheduled Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews in Terms 2 and 3. We are always looking for feedback from our school community on the teaching and learning programs we offer at Riverside High School and the systems we have in place to support and extend student learning outcomes.
Below is a QR code for families with a link to a short survey to provide feedback on our Parent/Teacher/Student Interview process for 2022.
We appreciate your valuable feedback and suggestions.

New changes to COVID-19 isolation
Public Health has recently changed the mandatory COVID-19 isolation period from seven days to five days.
This means COVID-19 cases can leave isolation, provided they:
- are no longer displaying symptoms on Day 5 of their isolation period, and
- have had no fever for 24 hours prior to Day 5.
People that leave isolation on or after Day 5 must wear a face mask in all settings for Days 5, 6 and 7 – even if they are not displaying symptoms. People are strongly recommended to wear a face mask indoors on Days 8, 9 and 10.
Students under the age of 12 and all primary school students are not required to wear face masks when leaving isolation.
To read more about this change, please visit the Tasmanian Government Coronavirus website.
For any COVID-19 enquiries, please contact the Tasmanian Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738, or Department of Education COVID-19 Support Hotline at COVID19support@education.tas.gov.au or on 1800 816 057.

Congratulations to Aurora D 8F
Aurora recently represented the school and Tasmania in the School Sports Australia National Triathlon Championships held in Hervey Bay.
Aurora delivered a great performance and showed wonderful sportsmanship and resilience as she competed during her individual event and relay team.
Congratulations Aurora on your positive attitude and commitment. We wish you every success in your future endeavours in Triathlon.
Riverside High School’s Music program has two key features: Gradual Release and Inquiry Based Learning. This is achieved through assisting students in identifying their music interests and looking at ways in which they can interact with this interest, whether it is through practical, analytical or compositional learning. By taking this approach students’ engagement is sustained through their time in the course. The Music program also offers many opportunities for students to develop performance skills outside of the classroom. Below are few of our most recent events:
Michael Dolce Masterclass
On Tuesday, 16th August, selected Grade 8 and Grade 10 Music students participated in a Music Masterclass with Michael Dolce, who is the guitarist from the hit TV show, The Voice. Michael guided students through improvisation strategy and in the process of doing so, helped students develop their confidence by finding their own style. Providing students with opportunities to learn from music industry professionals enables students to make connections with their own understandings and the real world.
The Battle of the Bands:
The Music program's biggest event of the year was held at Door of Hope, Friday, 2nd September. The night saw 12 acts and a total of 21 songs performed brilliantly, and under 1.5 hours. The event itself is wonderful for several reasons:
- It demonstrates the talent of RHS students
- It creates a team like and supportive atmosphere
- Students are given the opportunity to perform in front of an audience
- Each grade is represented by students either performing or providing technical support.
Battle of the Band Winners:
Off the Rock: Ruby R 10D and Taj B 10G
Band Section: Zapperheads (Bailey L 10B, Noah K 10D, Robbie S 10G & Theo P 10D)

Football
Firsts Football
The Riverside High Firsts Football team enjoyed a successful season, winning all but one roster game. During the course of the season the players developed not only their skills but their teamwork and trust in each other.
The grand final saw the team pitted against the powerful St. Patrick’s College team and a high-quality game ensued. The team scored early and matched the opposition with some outstanding attacking play combined with some desperate defensive efforts. Entering the final term Riverside High was 9 points behind and after some stirring words of encouragement from Coach Elliott, attacked early in the last quarter. Despite having many possessions in the forward half, the deficit was not reduced and St. Patrick’s College kicked away in the final minutes.
There was no doubting the effort and commitment from all players on the day, with special mention to Campbell A 10F, Jacob W 10C, Lucas W 9F, Sam R 9F and Jordan S 10H.
Congratulations to all players for an excellent season in 2022.

2nds Maroon Football Grand Final
On Wednesday, 7th September, a sunny day greeted all teams participating in the football finals at Prospect Park. Our team was prepared to take on St Marys District High who had proved to be a challenging opponent during the season. The first quarter saw a tight tussle with few goals and some inaccurate kicking and an unfortunate leg injury to Max S 10C, finishing his day. By the second quarter the team were hitting their straps with some great passages of play that led to goals and some outstanding defensive work off half-back.
The second half saw Riverside out run the opposition and register a comfortable victory. Once again, all the team played well and contributed to the win, however some standout performances included Liam B 9G, Sam G 9B, Charlie Q 9A, Archer H 9E and Rudi S 9F who scored 7 goals.
Jesse D 10D accumulated a high number of disposals and was efficient by hand and foot and deservedly was adjudged MVP.
The game culminated a successful season that saw many players grow in confidence and develop their skills. Well done to all players and best of luck for next seasons teams.

Hockey
On Wednesday, 7th September, Riverside High was fortunate to have two hockey teams make it through the knockout round, which resulted in them competing against each other in the Grand Final. Throughout the competition both teams remained extremely competitive, winning most of their games with (RHS Blue) 1st and (RHS Gold) 2nd on the ladder. The last game these two teams played against each other resulted in a 2-2 draw, so this certainly made for an exciting final.
The Grand Final saw Mrs Greatbatch’s RHS Blue competing against Mr Gregory’s RHS Gold with RHS Gold being the eventual winners on the day with a final score of 4-2. The finals were an outstanding exhibition of both competitiveness and friendship as everyone strived to play at their very best. After an early lead to RHS Gold, two quick goals to RHS Blue in the second half resulted in some very nervous moments as the last 5 minutes slowly ran down on the clock.
All students were exceptional in their attitude and endeavour on the day; however, a special acknowledgement must go to Bob M 9G whose consistency and commitment resulted in him being awarded the best on ground medallion by the two umpires.

Soccer
The 1st Soccer Grand Final was a great contest between Riverside High and Queechy. Both teams had success against the other during the regular season with Queechy coming away with a win in their last contest. It did not take long for Riverside to get their first goal through PJ C 9B which helped settle the team’s nerves. PJ was dominant up forward, using his pace to burn the defenders on his way to kick 5 goals for the match. Tomas B 9H was composed in the midfield and was rewarded with a goal in the second half. Overall, it was a fantastic team effort and a well-deserved victory.

Soccer
The final for soccer thirds was a great example of a team pulling together to get the result. Deloraine scoring the first goal was quickly answered by the Riverside team with an equaliser moments later. The game was very close with both sides having good possession, but the draw was finally broken by a Deloraine goal.
Going into the second half, the Riverside legends went into overdrive to try and secure an equalising goal but it wasn’t to be. The final result was 2-1 Deloraine. The team were gracious in defeat and having such a successful year, winning every match bar two, look confidently towards 2023 to be their year! Well done team!

Netball
All our RHS netball girls are to be commended for their fantastic effort and commitment all season long. I will say, we truly have some amazing netball talent at this school.
All teams had quite significant journeys throughout the season, coming away with some strong wins and tough losses. With some back and forth in placings throughout the roster, all teams found their rhythm in new competitive divisions, with two teams, 1sts and 4ths, making finals.
Since the beginning of the season, the level of skill, teamwork and sportsmanship across all teams, has progressed significantly. Supporting one another was the main focus across all teams. Both Miss Darsaklis’s teams are to be commended on their continuous support and encouragement of one another while taking on new coaches throughout the season with the 4ths taking home a great win against Queechy: 15-8.
Our firsts girls also came out on top with a fantastic win over Deloraine by 6 points. The firsts roster was limited, so we knew how the Deloraine girls played and we knew what we had to do. With the score a nail biting 9 all at half time, we made some important decisions and position changes which saw our girls gain a solid lead by the end of the 3rd quarter. These girls are to be commended on their determination to come out on top by playing clean, cohesive netball.
Well done to all 2022 netballers!
Georgia Rolls
Who could be some of the toughest sports people out there? I would say our RHS Saturday morning netballers are. Early Saturday morning rises, donning netball dresses in sub zero, brisk, winter weather and playing against other inner city and remote schools without a peep of a complaint from the girls. RHS were lucky enough to enter two junior teams in this years’ Saturday morning Junior Roster. With Junior 1st and Junior 3rd teams both having tremendous journeys of growth throughout the season.
The level of skill, teamwork and sportsmanship across all teams progressed significantly throughout the season, with thanks to our coaches Jakeeta B 9G and Bella M 10H who provided the girls with invaluable advice and support during the game, with training and organisational duties. Teamwork and cohesion were the focus this season and both teams are to be commended on their continuous support and encouragement of one another. Our teams consisted of girls who play state, club and even some who have never touched a netball before. The girls have continued to develop their understanding of the game whilst others showed great leadership qualities in the delegation of play on and off the court. A great season of tremendous netball has once again, come and gone. Looking forward to what next year will bring for this talented bunch!

This year, the Grade 8 Division 1 school netball team had quite a significant journey with some back-and-forth placings in divisions, they found their feet in Division 1 in the end, taking home some fantastic wins. I could not be any more grateful for these girls and the opportunity they have given me to start my coaching career.
This year we have had some very funny moments but all together these eleven girls have worked incredibly hard to get where they are and I could not be more proud to be their coach and just be able to watch them grow. Thank you for all the umpires who helped especially Sienna B 8D and Samantha D 9D who supported many times, even when they had their own priorities later that day.
Thank you to all the parents who transported the girls to and from training and games. Thank you to Miss Rolls, Mrs Greatbatch and Mr Elliott for all of your help and support, this year would have been a lot different without you. But most of all thank you to the girls, this year wouldn’t have been the same if you didn’t put your hand up to play, you have made my Grade 10 year even more memorable and I will forever be grateful. Thank you so much to everyone and it couldn’t have been a greater season for all of us!
Bella M 10H (Jnr 1st Netball Coach)
Prime Minister's Spelling Bee 2022
Well done to our wonderful Grade 7 and 8 students who participated in the 2022 Prime Ministers Spelling Bee. Congratulations to the following students: Edie B 7B, Kevin L 7E, Ethan B 7E, Tashi H 7F, Grace C 7F, Connor R 7H, Dylan W 8C, Nadya Az-Zahra Z 8B, Hannah K 8B, Sophia M 8B and Sithmi A 8B. They successfully spelt words many adults would struggle to know the meaning of, let alone spell, including astrakhan and psephology. For the record, astrakhan is the black or grey curly fur from the skins of lambs and psephology is the study of how people vote.
The national competition, which attracted a record field of 61,224 students, also produced two runners-up in each age group: two from South Australia, and one each from NSW, Queensland, WA, Victoria, and Tasmania. News Corp’s community ambassador Penny Fowler said the competition aimed to encourage a love of learning and boost childhood literacy.
“Congratulations to all the children who competed,” she said. “We hope you enjoyed the competition and discovered how much fun learning and rising to new challenges can be.”

Trevallyn Primary School Athletics Carnival
On Wednesday, 31st of August, a group of Grade 9 students volunteered their time to support the running of the Trevallyn Primary School Athletics Carnival at St. Leonards. This was a great opportunity for Grade 9’s to connect with the community and particularly the Grade 6’s that will be starting at RHS next year. The students involved showed outstanding leadership, initiative, and commitment. They arrived at 9:00am to help set up events before the primary school students arrived. They were stationed around the venue to support with the different events – encouraging and coaching students with technique, measuring and recording results, marshalling students, and joining in with novelty events!
The students involved should be incredibly proud of their efforts and conduct in the way they represented RHS. Trevallyn Primary School contacted RHS noting how impressed they were, and that parents, staff and students had all commented throughout the day on how outstanding the RHS students were.

Greetings, I am Erin of the Executive and Learning teams. I am best described by whatever book I am reading- currently The Stasi Poetry Circle by Philp Ottermann. I volunteer at Salvation Army Stores Launceston and spend my spare time writing (or at least anxiously overthinking the idea of writing something). I primarily pen emails but will also be performing at the Tasmanian Poetry Festival in September. On top of that, I occasionally venture into the Great Outdoors with my recently acquired skateboard. This has been a rewarding experience for both my lungs and I.
My role as Prefect so far has brought me regularly out of the introverted bubble described above. I have enjoyed the challenges we have faced so far, requiring much perseverance, creativity and many emails. The learning experiences, change-making opportunities and relationships I have gained are ones that I cherish and will wind up in poems at some point.
Come have a chat to me anytime about absolutely anything! Or even better- send me an email.
My name is Tara and I am a member of the Executive Portfolio as Head Prefect.
After moving from NSW at the start of Grade Seven, I have enjoyed exploring all the beautiful places Tassie has to offer. I love going on road trips with my family, especially to the beach. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my friends, walking my dog, cooking and reading.
Something I have been enjoying about this leadership position is the people you get to talk to and collaborate with. It has been great to have the opportunity to talk with more students and teachers and work closely on a leadership board, getting to know everyone and watching them grow. Teamwork is central to our roles as Prefects, and I have found it really rewarding to work with a group to achieve the common goal of making a difference in our school community.
Some of the things I enjoy about being a Prefect include organising and running events for our school, meeting other students and learning new leadership skills that could help me in the future.
My name is Amelia and I am part of the Wellbeing Portfolio. Along with all other Wellbeing Prefects, I have a big passion for sport, mainly soccer. I play for Riverside Olympic Football Club and am part of the U17 Girls and Northern Championship Women’s Team. I have been playing soccer for around nine years and have had the opportunity to represent Launceston and Tasmania. I love being active, especially outdoors and enjoy spending my time trying new things!
So far this year, I have learnt a lot from my role as a Prefect. It has given me such a great opportunity to take-on things that I have never done before and has really challenged me and my leadership skills. Being a Prefect has made me appreciate all that others have done for me and experiencing with this year’s board growing as leaders together.
