Dear Parents/Guardians
Last Friday, Riverside High School students in Years 7–10, along with staff, attended the Launceston College production of Once Upon a One More Time. The performance was outstanding and featured many former Riverside High School students, on stage and behind the scenes. The acting, dancing, singing, and music inspired and engaged our entire school community.
We believe it’s important for all young people not just those studying arts subjects to have the opportunity to experience live theatre. Thank you to Launceston College for inviting us and to our students for being such a wonderful audience.
Celebration Assemblies
Congratulations to all students who received certificates in our celebration assemblies last week! A full list of recipients is included in this week’s newsletter.
Certificates were presented to students for Outstanding Academic Achievement and Outstanding Effort at the mid-year reporting phase. Riverside High School uses data from these reports to determine award recipients. Thank you to the families who attended and congratulations to all students for their impressive results.
F1 in Schools Breakfast
On Wednesday, we held a breakfast to thank businesses, industry partners, and mentors who supported our F1 in Schools teams in 2025. Your generous financial support and guidance have been invaluable.
This year saw the inclusion a Cadet Program, allowing Riverside High School students to connect with peers from Riverside Primary School and learn how the program is structured. Special thanks to staff members Adrian Smith, Jay Duggan, Annette McCarthy, and Jo Howe for supporting our teams at the National Finals.

Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews
A reminder to families that Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews will be held on Monday, 18 August, 3:30pm – 5:00pm and Tuesday, 19 August, 3:30pm – 6:30pm. We encourage students to attend with their parents or guardians to celebrate their mid-year achievements, discuss opportunities for growth, and share insights into their learning journey.
The next report will be sent home in Term 4.
Maths and Numeracy at Riverside High School
In 2025, Riverside High School continues to offer Maths Extension as an elective subject for Years 8-10. The AST’s of Mathematics are Kylie Jago and Emily Peterson.

Riverside High School also participates in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC). The competition runs for 75 minutes and includes 30 questions of increasing difficulty. Students in Years 7-10 participated in the test on Tuesday and we congratulate them on their effort and look forward to receiving their results.
As we move through Term 3, I continue to be inspired by the energy, commitment, and achievements of our students and staff. Whether it's through academic excellence, creative expression, or community engagement, our school is a very busy place.
This week, we’re especially excited for Battle of the Bands, happening on Friday! It’s always a highlight of the term, showcasing the musical talent and teamwork of our students in a vibrant celebration of creativity. We encourage everyone to come along, cheer loudly, and enjoy the music.

When parents/guardians are exiting our school between 8:00 - 9:30am and 2:30 - 4:00pm on School Days, please note, turning right is prohibited. Violation of this rule may jeopardize your safety and others, and impacts on the traffic flow of our buses.

This year, our Year 7 students embark on an enriching journey through the HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) curriculum, enhancing their understanding of History, Geography, Business and Economics, Civics and Citizenship.
In History, students examined Deep Time, from the emergence of humans out of Africa to the arrival of First Nations peoples in Australia, exploring how and where people moved, as well as the changing nature of the land through the Pleistocene and Holocene periods. All Year 7 classes participated in an excursion to the Cataract Gorge as part of the unit. Ancient civilisations of Rome, Greece, and China were studied with interactive wall displays created to support learning.
Civics and Citizenship saw students develop an understanding of Australia’s Constitution and explain how Australia’s legal system is based on the principle of justice. Classes also studied the diverse nature of Australian society and identity, as well as the impact of shared values in promoting a cohesive society.
In Year 8, History students reviewed the period between 650 CE and 1450 CE. A focus study of Medieval Europe saw students develop an understanding of Feudalism and its impacts. They researched the roles and responsibilities of different social classes, the culture, conflict, (including weapons), crime and punishment, and the influence of the church on everyday life. A short unit on the Black Death had students develop an understanding of what it was, how it spread, some of the treatments used, and how the influence of the church started to decrease.
In Civics and Citizenship, students learned how to be informed about and participate in their democracy. The characteristics of laws, how they are made, and the different types of laws in Australia.
Year 9 students recognised diverse historical perspectives, reflecting on episodes such as the Industrial Revolution and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, highlighting child labour through the documentary series Children of the Revolution. Additionally, the Australian Wars unit explored the impact of British Imperialism on colonisation, with particular emphasis on truth-telling and the experiences of First Nations people. This included studying the podcast Stuff the British Stole: Shots Fired.
As part of the Year 10 curriculum, students examined pivotal events such as the Interwar years, the Treaty of Versailles, and the socio-political climate leading to World War II. Their study led to a comprehensive examination of World War II, including the rise of Hitler and the Holocaust, fostering critical assessments of history and the enduring legacies of colonisation and conflict in contemporary Australia.
This work culminated in the students testing their understanding in their recently completed exams.

Years 9 & 10 Newstead College Careers Expo
On Tuesday, 70 students from Years 9 and 10 and our Aspire group travelled to Newstead College to investigate employment opportunities and career pathways.
Students spent time engaging with more than 40 exhibitors covering employment options such as Tas Police, Dentistry, Accounting, Real Estate, RFDS, Aviation and many more. Other exhibitors covered pathways such as AMC, UTAS, TAFE and apprenticeships.
For the Year 10 students this helped them work on Transition Plans to Year 11/12 and consider the future past Year 12.
A number of employers held workshops, and the nursing/healthcare workshop was particularly popular with students. Many students mentioned this was a great opportunity to see hands on what is involved in nursing career and are now considering this pathway.
Students stated that they gained awareness of careers they had not considered before, and this experience will shape the courses they choose for Years 11 & 12.

Grade 10 students had the opportunity to complete White Card training, delivered by Pete and Steve from TasBGAS (Tasmanian Building Group Apprenticeship Scheme). Students completed the theory and practical elements in the one-day program which included a visit from Kane to discuss apprenticeships and employment opportunities.
Our students can now participate in work experience opportunities in construction, including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, plastering, bricklaying, painting, civil construction and more. We would like to thank Damian from DPCTas and Alaynah from DECYP for their support of our students.

Work-based Learning at Riverside High School
Grade 9 and 10 students have enjoyed a range of work-based learning experiences this year as they explore options for their future. Opportunities for work placements have been taken up by many students, including members of our Career Awareness Program supported by Beacon Foundation.
Students have engaged in a range of work placements with the support of local businesses including construction, electrical, plumbing, turf management, metal fabrication, civil construction, mechanics, engineering, childcare, dental assisting, trade, technology, statistics, barbering and more.
Some recent highlights have included Pheobe and Maddi experiencing the role of a Dental Assistant at The Dental Surgery in Newstead, Rory working with Champion Data at the Hawthorn v Port Adelaide AFL game taking statistics, Ben’s weekly placement with Launceston Golf Club on Fridays in turf management, Grace working in retail at Bunnings, Matthew trying his hand at barbering, Eli completing his White Card experiencing plumbing, and Hunter learning about the world of Civil Construction.
Six students are currently participating in Australian School-based Apprenticeships (ASbA). They share their time at Riverside High as they commence a traineeship or apprenticeship in their given career of interest.
Jake and Isobel are Grade 9s working in our Cafeteria and completing a Certificate in Hospitality while Rhianna from Grade 10 is at Frescos and working towards the same qualification. Two Grade 10s have secured work in metal fabrication with James at General Metal Products and Sidney at Challis Fabrication while George started this term with Crimson Construction.
We have been extremely proud of how students have represented Riverside High School and embraced the opportunity.
Thank you to the employers for their support of our young people as they explore future careers.

A/AST – Work-based Learning, Transition

Our Grade 10 students have been busy with working on their Transition Plans as they explore options for 2026 and beyond.
Students will attend the third transition morning on Wednesday in Week 5 as they finalise their transition plans. Grade 10 students across the state use the working document as they consider options for next year. Students access Transition Plans via Canvas and will be included in their reports at the end of the year.
Selecting courses for Year 11 has been a focus for enrolment at Launceston College and Newstead College with some students considering the VET offerings at other schools such as Agriculture at Exeter High, Community Services at Queechy High and Civil Construction here at Riverside High School.
While some are working towards an apprenticeship, they see the importance of understanding the pathways to achieve their goal and continuing to be lifelong learners.
Our transition mornings have been supported by colleagues from other schools, business, further education such as TasTAFE and University of Tasmania and the Northern Business and Employment Hub.
All students will be enrolling in their preferred destination in Term 4. Launceston College and Newstead College enrolments will take place on Wednesday, 12th November. We encourage families to attend. There will be more information about enrolment, including booking appointments in the lead up to enrolment day.
We will continue to support our students with their decision making and we are excited to help them with the next steps in their education.

Attendance – Leaving school early
What should you do if your child needs to leave school early?
Students are required to sign out at the Student Admin Counter if they have to leave school early for any reason. Communication from parents/guardians can be via:
- Phoning the Administration Office which is open between 8:00am–4:00pm (6327 6333)
- Using the Schoolzine App.
- Sending an email to either the Home Group teacher or our school email address Riverside.High.Admin.Staff@decyp.tas.gov.au
- When leaving our school for an appointment, students must have a GREEN LEAVE FORM which has been signed by Admin Staff and an Assistant Principal.
- The Leave Pass is preferably completed before school and must be left with a member of our Admin Team at the time of leaving.
- The student must also sign out at the time of departure.
- Students who sign out for appointments should sign back in at the Student Admin Counter on their return.
Following this process ensures that students meet their parents for collection promptly without interrupting classes.
Reminder of what your child should do if feeling unwell
If a student is feeling unwell or is injured, they need to get a signed pass from their teacher to go to the Admin office and ask for First Aid assistance.
The First Aid officer will then determine if the student is well enough to stay at school or needs to go home. The First Aid officer will then contact parents/carers if the student needs to go home.
Could parents/carers please discourage their child from messaging or calling home during class time instead of going to First Aid.
