Dear Parents/Guardians,
As we near the end of Term 2, I want to take this opportunity to thank our school community for your continued support, involvement, and commitment to our shared vision for student success:
“Every student at Riverside High School will be Known, Safe, Well, and Learning.”
This week, we completed our School Review, and I’m pleased to share that the feedback was excellent. The Review Panel affirmed the strength of our collaborative practices, the leadership and teaching teams, and the systems and structures we have in place to improve student learning outcomes. It was especially encouraging to see recognition of our strong academic results, inclusive culture, and commitment to student and staff wellbeing.
Thank you to the School Association, parents/guardians, and students who participated in the review. Your insights and feedback are invaluable. We remain committed to working in partnership with you to ensure the best outcomes for every student.
The Review Team’s affirmations highlighted the effectiveness of our structures and processes for co-constructing learning plans, which are ensuring consistent classroom adjustments as evidenced by feedback from families. They also acknowledged the passionate leadership driving a comprehensive school improvement agenda, the strong commitment from all staff and student leaders, and the alignment of curriculum planning across all three levels at Riverside High School.
Areas for growth include continuing to develop strategies for strengthening family partnerships in learning to prioritise connection, delivering timely and actionable feedback to students to support learning reflection, and communicating curriculum intentions and subject content more broadly to families. The School Review report is used by schools to inform School Improvement Plans.
Year 10 Transition Program
As we move through Term 2, I’d like to highlight the important work happening around student transitions, particularly for our Year 10 students as they begin planning for their future education and training pathways.
This term, our Year 10 Transition Program has been a key focus. Students have engaged in a range of activities designed to support informed decision-making about their senior secondary years and beyond. From career exploration sessions to guest speakers and site visits, we’ve aimed to provide students with the tools and experiences they need to make confident, well-informed choices.
We strongly encourage families to support students in visiting local colleges, training providers, and other relevant sites. These visits offer valuable insights into learning environments, course offerings, and support services helping students visualise their future and understand the options available to them.
The transition program is designed to ensure a smooth and supportive pathway for students continuing their education. It includes tailored academic and wellbeing support, flexible learning options, and strong connections with tertiary and vocational institutions.
We remain committed to fostering student agency in this process empowering students to take ownership of their learning journey and future goals. Year 10 students have now started their Transition Plans for 2026. Adam Child (AST) and Steven Hindrum are the Transition Leaders at Riverside High School. Please contact them if you have any questions regarding the transition program.
Breakfast Program – Riverside High School Café (8:15 to 8:45am)
Our Breakfast Program runs each morning from 8:15 to 8:45am in the school cafeteria. Breakfast is provided at no cost to students and includes cereal, warm drinks, toast, and fruit.
A big thank you to our Health Nurse (Nurse Nige), our School Chaplain (Michael), and the local businesses who generously donate food to support this program. Your contributions help ensure our students start the day nourished and ready to learn.
Jeanna Bolton
Principal
When parents/guardians are exiting our school between 8:00-9:30am and 2:30-4:00pm on School Days, please note turning right is prohibited. Violation of this rule may jeopardize your safety and others and impacts on the traffic flow of our buses.

All Schools Cross Country Carnival – Symmons Plains
Last week, a dedicated group of students represented our school with pride at the annual All Schools Cross Country Carnival, held at the iconic Symmons Plains Raceway. Despite the chilly conditions, the weather provided perfect running conditions, allowing all participants the opportunity to perform at their very best.
Our students demonstrated outstanding determination, resilience and sportsmanship throughout the event, tackling the demanding course with grit and focus. Each runner gave their all and it was heartening to see them supporting each other and showcasing our school values on and off the course.
A special congratulations goes to Flynn P, who delivered an exceptional performance in the Under 14 Boys division, finishing 3rd overall. Flynn’s incredible run has earned him selection in the Tasmanian state team, which will compete at the national championships in Ballarat later this year, a remarkable achievement!
We are immensely proud of all our cross-country competitors. Congratulations on a stellar effort and thank you for representing our school with such energy, pride and commitment.

Subject in Focus – Food Technology
Grade 7 Students Embrace Practical Learning in our Foods Classes.
As Grade 7 students settle into high school, they are introduced to a variety of practical learning options, one of the most popular being the Foods Class. In Term 2, these young learners are not only getting acquainted with their new environment but also gaining valuable skills in the kitchen.
The focus of this term is on learning how to use ovens and stoves safely, particularly while making pikelets, a favourite among many. Students follow simple but detailed recipes and methods to ensure their products are well-made and delicious. This hands-on experience is designed to teach them the importance of safety, precision, and following instructions.
This engaging and tasty approach to learning is proving to be a hit, as students eagerly look forward to trying out new recipes and honing their cooking skills.
High school is off to a delicious start for these Grade 7 students who opted in!
Riverside High School Grade 8 Students Shine in Foods Program!
Our talented Grade 8 students at Riverside High School are taking their culinary skills to the next level through our engaging Foods program. This term, they have been busy designing delicious sweet and savoury muffins tailored to healthy diets. Additionally, they have been investigating the nutrients found in their homemade sweet and sour chicken recipe. These activities not only enhance their cooking abilities but also deepen their understanding of nutrition and healthy eating. We are proud of their dedication and creativity in the kitchen!
Grade 9 and 10 Students invest interest in Food Vans as a Business.
Students have shown remarkable interest in the business of setting up food vans, a current trend on the food scene. Through their studies, they have explored various aspects of this exciting venture, including applying for permits, understanding health and safety regulations, and designing layouts and themes suitable for food vans as a business.
They have also delved into customer attraction strategies by creating menus that cater to diverse tastes. The students are eagerly looking forward to putting their knowledge into practice by creating one of their signature food items next week.
This hands-on experience not only enhances their business acumen but also fosters creativity and teamwork. We are proud of their efforts and dedication to learning about this exciting trend in the food industry!

Hi, I’m Williem, and I’m proud to be your Kingsford Smith House Prefect for 2025. I enjoy my role because I get to brainstorm big ideas for the school with my peers and be involved with younger grades. This allows me to help others become the best versions of themselves, while leading my house to being a happy, fun, and energetic community. Being a prefect has helped me gain confidence in my leadership skills and improve my public speaking.
In my spare time, I love to play many sports like basketball and football. I also love the beach in summertime and enjoy going to my shack to fish and head out on the boat. I enjoy riding dirt bikes, or anything with wheels and I love spending time with my family and friends.
My goal this year is to build a strong community around the school, improving the overall climate and the wellbeing of students. I’m confident that I can achieve this goal and leave a lasting legacy by making the school a better place for future students.
Hi, I’m Olive, and I’m a 2025 Kingsford-Smith House Prefect. I really enjoy my role, as I get to collaborate with a wide range of students, do what I love, and create fun activities and fundraisers for my peers.
In my free time, I play football five days a week, and on the other two days, I enjoy seeing my friends, spending time with my family, and if there’s any extra time going to work. I’m a very active person, as my life revolves around the football season. During the summer, I try to stay active and fit by going to the gym and riding my bike.
My goal this year is to help make school a more inclusive and enjoyable place to be. I believe that, as a Prefect Board, we can make this year unforgettable for everyone.
Attendance – Leaving school early
What should you do if your child needs to leave school early?
Students are required to sign out at the Student Admin Counter if they have to leave school early for any reason. Communication from parents/guardians can be via:
- Phoning the Administration Office which is open between 8:00am–4:00pm (6327 6333)
- Using the Schoolzine App.
- Sending an email to either the Home Group teacher or our school email address Riverside.High.Admin.Staff@decyp.tas.gov.au
- When leaving our school for an appointment, students must have a GREEN LEAVE FORM which has been signed by Admin Staff and an Assistant Principal.
- The Leave Pass is preferably completed before school and must be left with a member of our Admin Team at the time of leaving.
- The student must also sign out at the time of departure.
- Students who sign out for appointments should sign back in at the Student Admin Counter on their return.
Following this process ensures that students meet their parents for collection promptly without interrupting classes.
Reminder of what your child should do if feeling unwell
If a student is feeling unwell or is injured, they need to get a signed pass from their teacher to go to the Admin office and ask for First Aid assistance.
The First Aid officer will then determine if the student is well enough to stay at school or needs to go home. The First Aid officer will then contact parents/carers if the student needs to go home.
Could parents/carers please discourage their child from messaging or calling home during class time instead of going to First Aid.
