We hope our school community had a wonderful holiday and that everyone is refreshed for the busy term ahead. It was fantastic to see so many of our students wearing full school learning uniform this week. Thank you to the Administration Team who opened the Uniform Shop in the school holidays to provide second hand uniform for families at no cost. Please be aware that we still have a supply of second-hand uniforms.
School assemblies play a crucial role in fostering Riverside High School’s positive school culture, climate and community. In Term 4 we will have many celebration assemblies including our Year 10 Graduation Assembly and Final Grade Celebration Assemblies. In school assemblies we recognise student achievements across the whole school, we provide opportunities for students to showcase their talents and recognise those who have displayed our school values of Connection, Courage, Growth, Respect and Responsibility in their ways of working.
Assemblies bring the entire school community together, creating a sense of unity and belonging among students and staff and they provide a platform to communicate and reinforce the school’s core values and learning expectations. On Wednesday, we had our first whole school assembly for Term 4. Ruby and Jaylah performed ‘Always Remember Us This Way’ by Lady Gaga with this performance also being shared on our school Instagram page. The assembly also included a report from the Maths Relay, Rock Challenge, Prefects, Year 10 Council and Write a Book in a Day.

Big Freeze – Prefects and Student Councils
On Friday, 18th October, our student leaders coordinated a free dress day, lunch time barbecue, blue spiders, cupcakes and hot drinks to raise money for motor neurone disease. The fundraiser was supported by the entire school community and included the Big Freeze bucket fundraiser which saw students purchase raffle tickets with a chance to win an opportunity to drop a bucket of freezing cold water over their nominated teacher. Thank you to all our student leaders and staff who supported the day which created a strong sense of community with fun and laughter.
F1 In Schools Competition
Thank you to our families who supported their child to participate in the F1 In Schools competition again this year. Despite some changes to the structure of the competition for 2024, the Riverside High School students participated with enthusiasm, dedication and displayed outstanding leadership, resilience, collaboration and maturity. Included in the Newsletter this week is a report from the F1 program and photos. Riverside High School would like to sincerely thank the sponsors and businesses who support our F1 In Schools teams and we will continue to connect with Riverside Primary School and offer our cadet program in the future.

PAT Testing 2024
Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT) will be carried out with all students from the 23rd October to the 8th November. These tests, mandated by the Department of Education, Children, and Young People (DECYP) are designed to collect evidence as to where students are in their learning and monitor student achievement over time. Additionally, the data collected supports the next steps by informing teaching and learning to set targets and allocating learning resources.
At Riverside High School students complete PAT in Reading, Numeracy, and Science. The tests are completed online during their relevant core lessons. If your child is absent for any of the timetabled tests, they can complete catch-up tests held during the testing window.
PAT is just one aspect of our school’s assessment and reporting process. It doesn’t replace teachers' ongoing assessments of student performance, but it can provide teachers with additional information about students’ educational progress.
Students must ensure their iPad is charged and brought to school each day of the testing period.
If you have any questions relating to PAT, please contact our PAT coordinators Kylie Jago AST and Ben Gadsby AST.

We are very excited to be hosting the carnival at school again after a successful event in Term 1, 2023.
The program of events and times can be found below.
Families are invited to attend the carnival to watch all the action. We would like to involve our families more at our sports carnivals. If you wish to offer your support at our Athletics Carnival, whether it be recording times for a running event or measuring the distance of a jump or throw, please email Mr Timothy Elliott (timothy.elliott@decyp.tas.gov.au) or Mr Adam Sanders (adam.sanders@decyp.tas.gov.au) so we can discuss how we may be able to involve you.

Important information for you to know:

- Students will have their attendance taken in their Home Group class at 8:45am sharp on both mornings and then again at the end of the day before students are dismissed at 3:10pm.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL SCHEDULE
OFFICIAL START: 8:35am – Arrive and meet HG teacher in Home Room for attendance & briefing.
DAY 1 – Wednesday 6th November
Over Thursday and Friday of Week 1 this term, Riverside High School had six teams competing in the State F1 in Schools Challenge. Two teams competed in the Professional Category for teams who have competed before, and four teams in the Development Category for the teams in their first full year of competing.
On Thursday, teams submitted their printed portfolios for judging on content and presentation, along with their cars which were scrutinised to ensure they did not breach any of the many dimensions specified in the competition rules.
Teams also had a two-hour period to construct a professional trade display to promote their team and sponsors of the competition.
On Friday, teams competed in reaction-based racing with their cars along with interviews for their engineering and CAD understanding, their trade display and a 10-minute presentation about their team.
At the end of the day, Riverside High School had some outstanding results across both divisions.
In the Professional Division:
- Zenith (Ethan, Nina, Lucas and Charlie) finished first.
- Nemesis (Asya, Addison, Mia and Satadev) finished third.
In the Development Category,
- Bluefin (Nina, Alice, Millie and Louis) finished first.
- Visionary (April, Breanna and Yuxuan) finished second.
Bluefin also had the highest total score of the event which was an outstanding achievement.
Over the course of the two days, all teams performed extremely well and showcased all of their work over the last few months.
For this event to occur, the financial support of Bell Bay Aluminium and organisational help from Lou Clark have been crucial to the success of this event over many years and hopefully into the future.
In addition to our teams competing, there was a fantastic group of students who came along to support the event on each day. James, Nandali, Will, Dan, Bea and Lucy assisted in aspects of judging, organising teams and helping with the efficient racing of the students’ cars. Their mature and responsible approach over the two days certainly contributed to a very successful event.

Subject in Focus – Technologies - MDT
Materials, Design and Technology (MDT) in 2024 has conducted classes in Design in Wood and Metal, Applied Design and Work Skills in Technology as part of the learning program from Grades 7 to 10.
Students have been asked to follow set processes incorporating design and problem solving, using jigs and plans, establishing steps and routines and workshop safety as they complete either set projects or, in Grades 9 and 10, projects of their choosing.
In Grades 7 and 8 the emphasis has been on measuring, marking and cutting various materials to set sizes and tolerances. Projects included tic tac toe game, sliding pencil box and a small wooden foot stool.
In Grade 9/10 Metal, students have used the MIG welder, plasma cutter and have been introduced to the metal lathe to complete a G clamp, shelf, fire pot or piece of furniture. In Wood students were asked to complete a bedside cabinet with individual designed legs. Some students then commenced designing their own wooden tables.
To those students who engaged in the tasks, showed enthusiasm and followed instructions, both Mr Musovic and Mr Bonney have been very impressed with your results and participation and thank you for your endeavour and efforts.
A big thank you to both Adrian Stabb and Brett Mortimer for their help in MDT this year, especially with both Mr Musovic and Mr Bonney being new to the school workshop area.

Attendance – Leaving school early
What should you do if your child needs to leave school early?
For attendance register regulations students are required to sign out at the Student Admin Counter if they have to leave school early for any reason. Communication from parents/guardians can be via:
- Phoning the Administration Office which is open between 8:00am – 4:00pm (6327 6333)
- Using the Schoolzine App.
- Sending an email to either the Home Group teacher or our school email address Riverside.High.Admin.Staff@decyp.tas.gov.au
- Sending a text message to 0418 140 427 (MGM OutReach)
- When LEAVING our school for an appointment, students must have a green leave form which has been signed by Admin Staff and an Assistant Principal. The Leave Pass is preferably completed before school and must be left with a member of our Admin Team at the time of leaving. The student must also sign out at the time of departure. Students who sign out for appointments should sign back in at the Student Admin Counter on their return.
Following this process ensures that students meet their parents for collection promptly without interrupting classes.
Reminder of what your child should do if feeling unwell
If a student is feeling unwell or injured, the correct procedure is for them to get a signed pass from their teacher to go to the Admin office and ask for First Aid assistance. The First Aid officer will then determine if the student is well enough to stay at school or needs to go home. The First Aid officer will then contact parents/carers if the student needs to go home. Could parents/carers please discourage their child from messaging or calling home during class time instead of going to First Aid.
On Tuesday, 24th September, the Prefects held the staff carwash. The afternoon consisted of us sponging, rinsing and drying teachers’ cars.
In the weeks leading up to the car wash, the Prefect Board advertised the event and collected the names of teachers who were keen to participate.
Despite the unfortunate weather conditions, the fundraiser was proven to be a massive success, with the cars being left squeaky clean and the Prefect Board earning money to go towards their legacy.

My name is Estella, I am a member of the Community Portfolio for this year’s Prefect Board. Being a member of the Prefect Board has been an exciting and valuable experience which has allowed me to enhance my leadership and transferable skills whilst working alongside a keen and collaborative group of people.
Outside of school, I enjoy playing tennis and guitar, travelling, hiking, surfing, and spending time at the beach with friends. Inside of school, I enjoy all aspects of learning but particularly the subject of English.
I pride myself on being a kind and positive person who actively seeks new opportunities for growth and embraces challenges with an open mindset. My willingness to take on new opportunities is what led me to continue my leadership journey by applying for the role of Prefect. Effective communication is an essential leadership skill that I strive for, as well as critical thinking to find creative solutions for our school community. Fostering collaboration among team members, encouraging them to share ideas, provide feedback, and working together effectively is an important function of our Community Portfolio. Communication in the form of feedback from our student voice is a valuable tool that helps drive positive improvements for our school. I also believe it is important to obtain a clear and compelling vision in order to provide direction and inspire others to work towards common goals.

It was a great day at Prospect Park, for the Touch Football Competition, with 3 pools and over 5 teams in each.
Grade 8 girls had a fun day out learning the new game of Touch Football, they were able to see growing success throughout the day and even some wins/tries for one team.
Grade 7 girls had a great day starting with wins early in the day where they were able to claim a spot in the final to battle it out for third and a state spot, which they were able to claim.
The junior boys that consisted of both 7’s and 8’s had an outstanding day, they ended the day with a spot in the state final and went into a grand final against good competition. The final ended in a tie and went down to a drop off, where Riverside High School students were able to score and keep the opposition scoreless.
It was a great day by all. Well done and good luck to our two teams for states.
Emma Groves
Day 2 of the Touch Football Competition saw our senior teams play off against schools from around the northern area. It was a great day at Prospect Park with both teams doing very well in the pool games. Our girls team finished top of their pool and played Prospect High School in a cross over game. They won this game convincingly to advance to the grand final against St Pats.
The boys finished second in their pool on percentage and played a semi final also against Prospect High School. The boys also won their semi final to advance to the grand final against St Pats College.
Both grand final games were played in great spirits and were excellent to watch. At the completion of full time in the boys game they were tied 2-2 so they played an extra 5 minutes overtime and unfortunately ended up finishing 2nd place 3-2.
Despite defeating St Patricks College in the pool rounds the girls could not replicate this win in the grand final against St Patricks College.
All played exceptionally, with the final score being 3-1 to St Patricks College.
Well done to all players. Both teams have advanced to the State Finals to be played on Tuesday, 12 November at Prospect Park.
